Hi. Can any of you give me your opinions on either Bryson Middle in Simpsonville and/or Chapin Middle in Chapin? I think the first is in Greenville Co. and the other in Lexington-Richland 5. Thanks.
Thanks, Kim. Know any more about Lexington 5, its superintendent, Chapin Middle in particular? What's the area like?

Well, as a life-long resident (43 years and counting!) of District 5, I'll give you my opinion, remember, it's MY opinion ;). I went to one of the local high schools in the early '80s, taught for one year in one of the local middle schools in 2000 (detested the students, principal and assistant principal) and worked for the district office as a sub for about seven years and loved it (about 20 years ago).
For years the residents and school board were at odds but that superintendent was finally removed and Dr. AndersEn (no, that's not a typo, it is actually spelled that way), has done a lot to bring the district back together, but there is still some distrust between the board and the members of the community.
That being said, I think Chapin is the best part of District 5. It is currently a little bit smaller than the other zones, Irmo and Dutch Fork, and it is my personal opinion that the students have generally been better behaved. The area is growing rapidly and many residents are trying to slow/stop uncontrolled growth in the area. It is still considered a bedroom community for our capitol city, but many residents also work in the Newberry area. If you search for housing, you'll find that there are many nice single-family homes ranging from the low 100's to the half-million mark. It was once said that Chapin had the highest concentration of millionaires in the Midlands, and it may still be true, I don't know. If you have other questions, I'll be glad to try to answer them.

I am going to be scoring for the National Board from July 14-August 1st at Greer High School. I will be traveling from Florida and I am not that familiar with the area. My desire is to find reasonable accommodations for the weeknights and travel back to Columbia on the weekends to stay with my sister. I was going to make the commute, but with gas prices the way that they are that option is not cost effective. Anyone familiar with the area that could give me some advice? I would appreciate it! :o)
I've saw advertising for the insightsc.net program. It is an online H.S. Do anyone out there no anything about this process. I'm thinking about trying to enroll my son in the program next school year. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
I am a recent graduate with a B.S in Mathematics. While in college i was a Math major with a minor in education until my junior because i did not like the education department. I am thinking about entering the PACE program, but i've heard that many people are not fond about the program. Can anyone if any tell me about the program and the staff? Have anyone taken the ABCTE. And said i just take on-line courses in education to teach middle school? What should I do?
I'm visiting Fripp Island - week of June 15 - but can't afford golf on the island. Can someone please tell me of a good course / courses at a good price -- or some golf discounts available (on minister and school teachers salary) Many thanks. jmb
I am considering applying for a private school position in a small town in the Low Country. I know there is great variation from school to school, but I would appreciate any information. I am aware that the pay is very low compared to public school teachers' pay.

I teach in a private school in the upstate of SC...We pay 1/2 of public school. I was going to move to the lower part of the state, and checked into a private school and they only paid 11,000. I have 19 years experience Master +30. Retirement is terrible. It is my ministry to teach in a private christian school, and money is not everything. I love private school due to being about to teach a christian world view. Good luck. Not sure what you want to know specifically?
I was interested in any independent school, Christian or not. I am like you, I could not survive on $11,000 a year. I did not want to waste any school's time applying if the salaries were that low. Like you, I am Masters+30, with over 20 years experience. I was hoping many teachers on this site had at least heard discussion about the comparison between public and private school salaries. I am going to call the schools I know have openings and check it out. I am sure the salaries vary a lot. I don't want to name the specific schools, but they are near Orangeburg. Def. call and check it out, but generally the lower part of the state does not pay well. They are poorer rural schools. A friend of mine is in the Camden area and makes a little over 12,000. I checked into a school in Mccormick and it was 11,000. The principal talked me out of the job. haha Not sure about orangeburg. You could also check near by in Columbia. They would pay better. Good luck. Don't forget to ask about insurance and retirement.
i have recently been offered a job to teach in south carolina, with options either richland or fairfield county. i am a bit curious about things that pertains to salary, housing terms, is it more white or black population, how about the ratio of filipinos working there as teachers, class size (what is the average ratio of teacher to students), and what good benefits to expect... please advise..
Richland and Fairfield county's are predominately African Americans students. You may be dealing with a lot of inner city kids or kids from rural areas. Your salary is based on your education level and years of experience. Remember there are a lot of behavior problems in these two areas. The cost of living is average. You can rent an apartment between $650.00-$750.00 a month. Hopes this info helps.
