Than...See MoreIt is hard to get a job in MCPS. I met with personnel at a job fair re PWCPS and they made the commute seem short. When you say the commute will be long, do you mean at least an hour? If so, is that to Manassas City or PWC? I thought about applying to Manassas City, but you mentioned things were not so great...what is wrong with them?
Thanks, Karen

- Archdiocese of Washington DC has a number of openings, especially in elementary schools listed. - There is a private school listing in DC and a number of those schools have openings. - St. Coletta's Special Education Charter School is a beautiful, modern campus right opposite RFK Stadium that usually have openings.
I'm writing this for my not-so-tech-savvy father. He has actually been a teacher for 30 years in a religious-school setting. Obviously, he's not certified, but he has lots of experience. The school where he teaches is making noises about letting him go. He recently found out about Old Dominion's Career Switcher program, so I am wondering about whether or not it would adequately prepare him for teaching in a setting that is completely different from what he is used to. Also, he would want to stay where he lives, the Hampton Roads area. Does anyone know what the employment situation looks like for teachers in that area, and for new teachers in particular? Thanks for your input.

Just to clarify though: are you saying that most of the hiring in the Hampton Roads school systems is being done in Special Education? Thanks again.

Chesapeake TeacherKatie, I'm sorry to reply that right now Chesapeake Public Schools have a hiring freeze due to budget cuts. I'm not sure about Norfolk or VA Beach, but I know last year they also cut back the number of new hires. I wish you luck on finding something.
Our contracts are coming out soon, and I'm aiming to drag my feet a little until I hear back from some other possibilities. Does anyone know how to find out how long one can legally hold onto a contract before signing it? They typically ask for it back within a week or two, but I was recently told that the legal limit is longer than that.
I am a Junior at Virginia Commonwealth University, pursing my degree in Elementary Education and my Master's in Education. I have recently been informed by a family friend that this may not be the best choice for me to make. I will not be graduating for another two years because of the Master's in Education program, but I am getting really nervous. I am concerned about whether or not I should try to continue down this path or run for the hills while I still have some sort of a chance to do so. I would just like some type of advice or relief, because I want to teach really badly and I am entertaining the thought of applying for Teach for America after graduation. I just think that I need some truthful words from people in the heat of this profession.
What happens if you have interviewed at multiple schools and are offered a position at one before hearing from the other? Would the other still have the chance to make you an offer or are you essentially removed from the running at that point? I have been told conflicting things about this from different people.

Has anyone used this method? I'm working with a third grader who does not quailfy for any services. But she is reading on a 1st/2nd grade level. I read in Timothy Rasinski's, Fluent Reader" that there is great results with this method. I searched the internet and there were positive comments also.
This is the first time I have tried this and I found it in Rasinski's materials also. I am using this with a fifth grader who is reading on a second grade level. I've been reading with her for about 2 weeks. She falls in the same category as you child. She does not qualify for any services. I haven't done a pretest, but I need to do this to documenthe progress she is making. I can tell a difference in her speed by listening to her as we read. I hope it works as well as they say it does. I am desperate.
Just graduated a bunch of kids Saturday. Some good, some bad. Some magna c um laude, some praise the laude. Now, I'm kicking back enjoying a few well deserved days off!
