Just wanted to let everyone know that Berkeley County School principals are still hiring unlicensed teachers to work in their schools even with the glut of qualified teachers available. Forget that nasty teaching license and PRAXIS scores, just go to church with the principal and you have an automatic teaching career in WV!!!

Louisa High will be sharing the middle school. They'll be going 3 days a week 8-5 (High being MWF, Middle being TRSat) That'll last until January when they'll be able to bring in some trailers for the high school. As far as I know, Thomas Jefferson Elementary is closed for the year, and their students will be sharing another elementary school on some sort of staggered schedule.
Prayers for Louisa!I hope and pray that everything goess well for you folks in Louisa. Prayers and blessings! Thanks for being thoughtful, Bulldog! :-)
She's both...and neither...and some of each...and none of each...
And we wonder why our schools are hurting? With ninnies like this in charge, it's a wonder that we do as well as we do. She needs to step down so the good people of VB can bring in someone who will be dedicated to helping the kids.
I need everyone's 2 cents advice. I am a new teacher in VA, I used to teach in a nearby state with a union, somehow I do not agree with the unstructured methods, curriculum and grading system of this school district. Their forms of assessments really sucks! I can't believe that this is the only time they are using formative and summative assessments, exit tickets etc. Now I know why my child's teacher could nt explain how my child got a B on her report card, and how one test in science is the basis of my child's grade in the report card. This school system requires compulsory departmental meetings after work hours, after school activities and workshops without compensation. The principal and vice principal are allowed to threaten and bully a teacher in a closed door meeting. They assign you at a bus duty spot that cannot be covered by worker's compensation because you are standing on a non-school property, so if you get run over by a car, it's your fault!
The payroll short-changed me by one year. They would not honor the more than 90 days I have last year so instead of being a step 18, I am now on step 17.
The teachers in this school system are suckers for a small piece of bread the board will throw upon them, and most of them are power hungry know it alls. It's all competition on who should be the coordinator, team leader, point person and coach. Everybody wants to be the little principal. There's no team work, no organization at all.
This school flunked the SOL twice already, instead of analyzing and improving, that part of reading skills or math skills their students failed on, the admin and staff are blaming it on the parents, children etc. Wastes their time justifying why they failed.
It's so different from the nearby state I came from, the school that failed the state test analyzes the part of the test whereits students failed and works the next school year to improve on that skill.
I moved here because I am newly married and my husband lives here I have no choice but to move to VA and apply in a NOVA school. He could not sell his house because of the big decrease in value.
They don't have centers for the gifted programs, they don't have regional schools for children with extreme ED, LD, Autism, and ADHD.
I can't work on a school system whose working culture and educational philosophy and practices are too different from my own.
They always warn us not to share their worksheets, journals, etc to our teacher friends in other counties, but most of their worksheets, journals etc are outrightly from other va county despite the fact that it says *cps copyright.
I cannot understand how a lot of schools fail the SOL test, I think it is an easier state test compared with other state test. SOL is not a timed test and has no writing part in Math, Reading and Science, however a lot of students fail it.
The State Assessment Test of the test I came from is TIMED and has brief constructed written response in Math and Reading, nevertheless most of its districts pass the test.
Also the VA benchmark test can't be used for data utilization, the benchmark is not computerized thus, there is no information a teacher can derive on where the student must improve in order to prepare for the SOL. The state I came from has their benchmark state computerized and is given 3 times in year, it provides individual results and whole class results, this helps us to know what skills we need to reinforce to our students individually and to our class or grade level.
There is too much redundant paper works, they don't have a general student database where everyone can access.
Each county has their own IEP and own ELL system, that's why when a student moved from one county to another, we have to input everything to our own county's database. Unlike in the state I came from, that state has only one system that each county uses, therefore when a student moved from one county to another, all we have to do is request for access of that student's IEP in the system and there it is no more re-entry or re-typing.
VA is soooo delayed!
The teachers are too dependent on safari montage. My school don't use textbooks, teachers only use worksheets and whatever information they can get from the internet. My childs school in this *cps uses textbooks no wonder her school has been passing the SOL for 10 years.
In this county I work in right now, teachers have no planning time, they say all counties in Va have no paid teacher's planning time. It also does not have recess monitors, its the teachers who monitors the students during recess, instead of the teachers planning or preparing for the next lesson.
I just want to walk out the door and never return. How do I file a resignation without them charging me a breach of contract? I would like to apply to nearby states even if it means I have to travel 40 to 50 miles away. Once I leave this VA school system, I will never ever set foot to teach on any Va public schools.

Like a poster stated, IF POSSIBLE, stick it out for the rest of the year. If you quit mid-year, it may hurt your chances in the future for future employment. In the meantime, look into other schools, start sending out resumes, and hope for the best. Said county could find another person who is willing to put up with the "abuse," the politics, and other nastiness that takes place here. Best of luck!

Not anymore! A NOVA school district has implemented a retake policy in their schools. In middle school for example, if a student does not score a 98%, they are able to take a retake in order to get an "A+". The students have figured out that there really is no need to study anymore. They take their chances, see what their grade is, make a few corrections, and take retakes until they earn the grade they want. While the policies at each middle school vary slightly, they all allow students to retake a test, at least once. After a test, there is often literally a hundred students asking to retake a test. Many of these students scored well the first time (A's and B's). They simply want to take their chances of scoring better. Work ethic out the window!
Take note, grades are now UNRELIABLE. This is happening at the high school level, too. With unreliable grades, how can a college take this district seriously. Now, it will all be about the SAT or a similar test. Teachers cannot even truly know who their struggling students are, as their grade books show mostly "A's". The new grade replaces the real grade. End of story.
The achievement gap has disappeared, almost overnight. Or has it? What has really happened is that the grades are inaccurate. SOL scores will not bear out an "A" score given to a student in class. Neither will the SAT's.
It's called mastery learning. Yet, the same students who fail a test are not really mastering a topic. At some point, you basically wind up spoon feeding them their answers, just so you can move on. The low students don't learn any more, the higher students learn they don't need to really try, because why should they if they can simply redo / retake.
There is a thread that gets into this topic on the math board. If you go to the math board, I think the thread subject lines mention homework. I think it is an interesting thread. My horrific story of being forced to give retakes is written there

I'm a certified elementary teacher and I'm almost done with my special education endorsement. I'm looking to relocate to the area and wanted to know how is there job market there. I'd prefer to teach in an urban area. I'd be relocation from Detroit Public schools, so if the area is low income that's OK as well.
I am certified in middle school here in CT, but the jobs here are extermely rare - been looking for almost 5 years and managed to land a few LTS assignments, one half-time assignment, and some para jobs. I do have my Masters.
What is the job outlook in VA? Are there teaching positions available?

...See MoreYou should be able to find a job without much problem since you can pull ELA and Soc Sci. Just so you know, VA is a right to work state and the wages are not as much as what you are used to seeing in the NE states. The cost of living is much lower in some areas, so be sure to check all of these things.
Good luck!
