I just looked at the salary scales at FCPS, and the money looks really good (I'm from FL where the pay/retirement is terrible). I'm wondering how expensive the cost of living is there? I wonder if it will be worth it for the extra $15,000 a year I could make, or if it would just be eaten up. Thanks!
I teach ESL and I was offered a job one week after applying. This is what I did: I emailed all the principals. I attached a short note that I changed out the name for in each one, attached a CV, references, and VA Teaching license.
There is also a critical shortage of teachers in Loudoun County west of Fairfax.

Martinsville has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state and not sure about the district budget situation. Danville is already worried about the cuts they will have to make next year. The Superintendent in Danville has to play the role of part time Principal at one of their schools because they couldn't afford to hire a principal. Halifax County has a new Superintendent who is making sweeping changes, not for the good some would say.....so take your pick.
I love working with 4th graders...love the age...but the STAAR test for 4th grade focuses on writing and, at my high needs school, it's a really hard grade to teach. When I taught in CA, there was only testing every other year, so 4th grade had less pressure (which may have changed since I moved).
As I start looking for teaching jobs in Virginia for a possible move, I'm just curious which grades I'd be most interested in.

Hello, I am relocating to the arlington, va area and I wanted to know if their are educational recruitment fairs for Northern Virginia school districts.
I usually visit each district's website but Fairfax County Public Schools is having a secondary fair in Feb. and an elementary fair in March. It is by invitation only. Visit their website and apply. [link removed]
Confused Sorry to butt in but ....I had hard time understanding Arlingtons pay scale. I have a masters and 7 years of experience.Approx. what would the pay be like?
Be careful with them. While I am not in the state of Virginia I an tell you that my state does not accept degrees from them in the teaching field. Having a degree from them is the same as not having a degree at all here.

03/20/2013, Woodbridge, VA Prince William County. In Fairfax county, Alexandria, the cost of living is high! That includes gas being above 3.80 per gallon, groceries are high and entertaining out side of work.
$65,000 take away 30%, then insurance, VEA, 5% retirement, and so on.
