We really need VT in our exchange. If interested, send your name, school address, grade. Make sure I get your e-mail address too so we can communicate.
Just received my biennial spam from the VEA telling me who I am supposed to vote for. Needless to say, the entire Democratic slate. I am not voting for Doug Racine, no way...no how. I do not see a 'threat' posed to educational circles by either Jim Douglas or Con Hogan or Anthony Pollina. I do see a 'threat' posed by the VEA by their smug arrogance in believing that we educators have a ring in our collective noses with which they can pull. Years ago when Madeline Kunin was roaming the book fair floors with Maida Townsend at Teachers Convention, a colleague and I were seen wearing Republican buttons. We were promptly approached by these Democratic Matrons who were aghast that we would dare display a Republican political preference at a Vermont educators forum. We politely stated that we were educators were practicing exactly what we teach our students to practice. Something along the lines of being "critical and independent thinkers." I remember their leaving with disgruntled mumbles and murmurings. Such arrogance! The book vendors remarked what a 'breath of fresh air' it was to see our buttons. A few said they would have liked to have worn similar pins but 'you just cant do that here.' Very interesting.... Methinks the VEA and the Democratic Party have been wrinkling the sheets in the same political bed for too many years. Let the VEA not disrespect its membership with inane meaningless endorsements such as these. Let us think for ourselves! ....a prime reason I dont belong to the VEA/NEA any longer.
Hello. I am an inspirational author and speaker who recently published his memoir. It is spiced with blunt honesty and biting humor. My story in a nutshell:
Although I had to overcome years of countless and extreme adversities, I still have great zest for life. Before we were twenty years old, my brother and I endured war, killer illnesses, starvation, homelessness, floggings, abandonment, exile and slavery. But by the time we were thirty-some years old, something had seriously gone wrong with us. We had stubbornly worked our ways through college, married, and had become American citizens and world travelers.
In years past, my children marched in Veterans Day parades as part of Cub Scout and other organizations. I wasnt there to see them...I had school. Absolutely shameful that schools do not annually observe Veterans Day.
My biggest outrage: We are mandated seemingly under penalty of law to incorporate the life and achievements of Martin Luther King into our classes each MLK day, yet nothing, and I mean nothing, comes from our administration and school board with regard to Veterans Day. I make it a point every Veterans Day and Dec. 7th Pearl Harbor Day to relate to my classes the history, the meaning, the relevance, the honor due the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country. I spend EVERY class period on those days "lest we forget." I also write to the administration every year asking why Veterans Day is so callously "overlooked." Never a reply!!
This country has a long way to go in securing our future by preserving the past. Anyone else have this same sense of angst and urgency? My anger spilleth over.
I teach in a public elementary school in Ohio and we do a Veterans Day assembly every year. There is a different presentation each time. This year, our assistant principal had written to one of our state senators and received a United States flag with a certificate of authenticity that it had flown over the U.S. capitol building the first week of school. The flag was presented to our principal by some of our local veterans along with an explanation for what each fold in the flag means when the flag is folded into the triangle shape. It was really interesting, as I had never heard it before. Each year we have representatives of retired military personnel from the community attend. The school choir performs some appropriate music - this year they did two beautiful songs which I hadn't heard in previous years, along with the National Anthem, and a few other standard patriotic songs. We also have a wall of honor. Each year in the two weeks leading up to Veterans Day, we send out notices for the families of our students. We ask them to list the name and military branch of any family member that has served in the U.S. military. Each year the wall of honor is updated to include the new names. It's very nicely done and it never fails, that every year the assembly brings tears to the eyes of many of the staff.
My question is why is this being compared to MLK? In my area every public elementary school does something for Veterans Day. I wouldn't say that observing MLK's birthday is considered mandatory by administrators at least not in the public school setting. Be proud of what you do for VFW and share the ideas with the other schools in the area. It sounds like a problem in the private sector to me.

Two of our gov candidates have called by home this weekend with a recorded message and numerous 'recorded spokespersons' for the parties. How do you tolerate them?
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to INKBANK Cartridge Recycling Fundraising Programs ([link removed].
If your school is not currently recycling inkjet and laser cartridges, you may be missing out on one of the most lucrative fundraisers ever. If you are recycling, we hope your experience has been financially rewarding. I would like to invite you to visit our website as http://WWW.INKBANK.COM and see our current cartridge values, our “5 Minute Crash Course on Cartridge Recycling”, and see how we are making a difference across North America in financially supporting the PTO/PTA effort and protecting the environment.
Just a note to let you know I have more than fifty classic short stories at my site. These are public domain stories for you to use as you like and include many classics for teenagers ("The Scarlet Ibis" and several by Poe.) I also have lots of writing prompts. Hope the site is useful to you.
