I'm just a lowly sub, but I go to 20-25 different
classes each year. How many of you can say you've taught
in 20 different classes? Admittedly, while my depth
of "teaching" is shallow or even non-existant, I often
see which kids are getting the best grades. When I get
the chance to ask the student [only in grade school] if
he/she gets help at home, the answer is "YES". I don't
sub in the jungles of middle school, and I figure high
schoolers are mostly on their own.
But this might be a very revealing question to
ask your students; Do they get assistance [or even
encouragement] from any friend or relative on a regular
basis? I bet 90% of the best students get help. And if
this is true, isn't that the answer to our dismal
international standing: the PARENTS must become
involved! That would take some pressure off of the
