If all goes well I will be graduating with a B.A. in elementary education in Colorado in August of 2007. I have been considering which states I should look for teaching jobs, and I was wondering: is Wisconsin out of the question? Is the job market in elementary as rough there as the rest of the country???

Generally, WI is a very tough state to get an elementary job. However, that will likely be changing in the next several years as the number of teachers nearing retirement increases.
Many schools in the southwest US (AZ, TX, CA, NV) are in dire need of teachers. I know of several Wisconsinites who have had job offers and some who have taken jobs out there.
True. It seems that all the states I'm interested in are the competitive ones. :-( I suppose I had better look into the ones that you mentioned.

Typically what is done is that a fee is charged and you can get out of it. Ask this also on the administrator's board on here but that is the answer you will get there as well I am sure.
Check the master agreement language, but most districts require some type of "fine" if you break contract after a certain date. However, if you have had a good relationship with the district they may consider waving the "fine" if the cricumstances of breaking the contract are unavoidable. Bottom line, talk to your union reps.

I am traveling with my wife to wisconsin and she is hoping to teach in the Madison area once all licensing is complete and all. She has taught Grades 1 - 6 for the last ten years. What kind of compensation should she expect. She has an american education.
So, is it any problem for someone certified in WI to get IL cert.? I've heard our standards are higher than those in IL. I've submitted my app. to get IL cert., as I live in SE Wisconsin, and would be able to commute to NE IL in 30-60 minutes. Want to broaden the area in which I would teach, to give me more options. Thanks, Michelle
You have to submit college transcripts, WI license, letter from superintendant in district you have worked or student taught (this is to waive your student teaching requierment), pay 30 dollars, and pass the IL basic skills test. The state of IL will then review your work and decide what your deficiencies are and tell you what you need to do to get IL certified. They will immediatly issue you a provisonal licence and you have 2 full years to complete missing requierments. The basic skills test must be done within 9 months of being issued the license. You can tell them to issue you provisional on August 15th which gives you a full year of teaching before you have to pass the test. Good luck!

I'm wondering how what the chances are of finding a position as an English teacher in Wisconsin, anywhere in Wisconsin. The position doesn't need to be near Madison or Milwaukee. I love the state, the weather, the attitude and the culture of the state and I want to call it home. I'll have my BA in English this next Spring. I have no idea if Oklahoma teaching standards transfer or if I'll need to get Wisconsin certification. I don't know if Wisconsin will assist with loan forgiveness. I really don't care.
I want cheese curds and brats, snow and rain and a school system that supports students and teachers alike. Oklahoma is not very interested in quality secondary school teachers.
I think you can get a temporary 2 year failt easily. I know WI and 31 other states have something worked out. Not sure if OK is one of those states. First action plan....get licensed and then apply. That way when they ask you can say...I have a certificate.
Does anyone know if it's possible to break a contract this late in the summer? If so, what are usual consequences? I know I'll have to pay some money, but I'm concerned about anything being done with my license, etc. Thanks

Check your contract, there should be a fee penalty there. I don't think anything can be done with your license.
I've known of a few teachers who get a "better" job and jump ship. Usually not that big of a deal.
sirrahalegnaCheck with your district HR people. We were trying to sell our house this summer but no luck. If I broke the contract less than 30 days from the first teacher day I would have had to pay $500. No impact on credential, though.
