The final checks before summer were docked a few hundred dollars each to make the state budget balance. Our state's testing program used to offer bonus money for excelling, now we still have the test, just no bonuses. State retirement contributions are required of the employees, but the state hasn't fully funded their part for years. The health insurance keeps getting more expensive for children and spouse payments while the coverage shrinks and shrinks. During recent snowy days, local policy requires teachers to be to work on time during delay days. Later in the morning they canceled school and told the teachers it is a "no day". That means the building is open and you can stay, but you will not be paid for the day. (after reporting per policy) We have had numerous Saturday schools over the last 2 years. There is a new teacher evaluation instrument from McRel and the way it is being administered makes it clear what counts....appearances. Very little has to do with actual class instruction. Right now teachers get one case of paper to use for the YEAR. Any additional copies come from your own pocket. There has been no state staff development funds for years, and the RFTT money is limited. No unions means no real voice at the table here in NC. The state legislators here have been talking about how good teachers have it, and are seeking to create a public uproar so they can rob the teachers while padding their pet projects. The populace is buying it too. N.C. stinks as an employer right now. We can earn over 40K, but they steal 8% for retirement and tax us to death.
On 2/21/11, Mar...See MoreYour NC salary info is completely wrong. We have a state salary schedule posted online for anybody to see. Maximum amount for a teacher with Masters and National Board Certification is 64750. Some counties (we mostly have county systems) pay a subsidy on top of that. It's never a fortune but it's certainly more than 40,000.

There is no funding for education right now across the entire country. Classroom size has increased. Teachers have been furloughed, laid off, and even terminated as a result of budget cuts. Not only does this hurt the students, but it also hurts education. Most teachers want to do what is right for their students, without being disrespected by their respective communities. Without unions and/or collective bargaining, teachers will be at the mercy of government officials, who are not in the business. Eliminating collective bargaining for this group of people would give the legislators total control over education including the budget, curriculum, personnel, everything. The future of the USA is in our children. If they are not educated, who will care for us when we are old? Who will become the scientists, engineers, doctors, etc.? Even though my state does not allow unions (or tenure), I believe the teachers of WI have the right to belong to a union and to bargain through such an organization. We teachers have sat quietly and listened for far too long to those who complain about those teachers who only "work 9 or 10 months a year, with short work days." We have remained silent to how students are allowed to basically run over any teacher without consequence to themselves. We need to speak up. This is important to each and every teacher in the USA.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% of Likely U.S. Voters agree more with the Republican governor in his dispute with union workers. Thirty-eight percent (38%) agree more with the unionized public employees, while 14% are undecided.
LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD FOR EDUCATORS AND WORKERS’ RIGHTS ~ We Pledge To Stand With America’s Educators, School Support Staff And Workers ~
We believe that educators, school support staff, nurses, firefighters and other middle class workers are essential to the well-being and safety of our families and communities.
We believe that working Americans need to use the strength of our numbers to fight for better wages and benefits, job security and safer workplaces.
We believe that the attacks happening in state after state are more of the same old partisan politics in which whatever party is in power tries to hurt the other side.
We believe that while we suffer, the same politicians support tax breaks for corporations and CEOs. Politicians know unions are a check on corporate power, so they are working to weaken or eliminate them.
To fulfill the promise of workers’ role in restoring balance to our economy, protecting and growing the middle class, and sustaining our communities, we urge governors and politicians to:
* Meet with educators and other public employees to find fair and sensible solutions that are in the best interests of the nation’s middle class, children and families.
* Stop the power struggle. We need balance that brings our leaders together to create quality jobs and solves the problems hurting middle class families across the country.
* Do their share by cutting their own high salaries, pensions and perks before asking frontline, middle class workers to sacrifice even more in wage and benefit cuts.
* Solve the problems of the middle class instead of giving even more power to the corporate CEOs who got them elected.
* Remember that public employees are our neighbors and friends. They are educators, firefighters, social workers, and police officers. They make a lot of sacrifices and make a big contribution. It’s important not to vilify them or to suggest that somehow they are the cause of state budget problems.

Education is funded by tax dollars. If we stop paying taxes for it then their will be no education system and only the rich will be able to have their children educated.
People complain about the unions and on some issues they should. But we also want to get all children educated and not just the upper class. Cut backs to education is going to hurt this country. There are many areas were we could make cuts but education should never be cut but increased.
Taxes pay for schools, Prisons, Fire Fighters etc... Its funny how people complain about that until their house is on fire, or their neighbor is a child molester who isnt locked up in prison, or how their child is in a class room with 40 other kids and falling behind because they need more help and cant get it. People always complain until they are the ones who need that service provided.

We have all seen those doctors giving "phony-baloney" doctor's notes on the cable networks. Please heed this advice --- don't put yourself in a situation that will force your school district to deny your absence excuse. You would be the first one to be terminated from your job for FRAUD.

It's time that you as other union member started to pay your own way and stop asking for higher taxes because you want everyone else who works to pay for your pension fund and health care. Just because you are a teacher that does not give you the right to rip off other workers because you are to cheap to pay your own way!
WE HAVE AGREED TO THE INCREASES - Walker has said now that's not what he wants. What he really wants is passage of his repair bill. What else is in it that must pass? Sale of our powerplants to Koch brothers! AND busting the public Union.
Don't know them? Look them up.

Be glad to pay our own way as soon as you start paying us the amount a babysitter gets to watch your child per hour, per child we "babysit" and educate. Then, we can afford to pay our own way. Do the math....$5.00 per hour per child (I live in a non-union state) x 5 hours of teaching time (contact time) a day is $25 per day. Multiply that $25.00 by 25 kids for a total of $600.00 per day. $600.00 x 180 instructional days will be... $108,000 per year. When you pay us babysitting wages...we'll be able to pay our own way. If you want to pay us for our actual working hours add another $54,000 to that total. I'll be happy to pay for insurance, and the other "perks". Until you realize the enormous challenge and the actual cost per hour per child, it is easy to have a skewed perspective. In the summer, my (Christian) school runs a summer day camp, parents eagerly pay $35.00 per day with group sizes of 25 campers. The school makes a large amount we use to help fund our annual budget, and that camp is mostly play based. How much more is educational time worth?

No evidence that they do, actually the evidence is that non-union state school do much worse by any measure.
Do the countries that have leap frogged us > have teachers unions?
How will what Governor Walker has > proposed hurt the students?
It will take away the voice and political powers of a strong advocate for children .

Send kids to school to learn if they act up send them home and let the parents deal with it even if they dont want to. Its not a teachers job to make them behave that is the parents job and no one elses. Let them deal with it.
