Hello!

I recently graduated and have begun searching for a teaching job for the 2009-2010 school year. I am new to this, so I have a few questions. First, what are the best websites to utilize when searching? I have used Wecan, school spring, and other various job search engines. However, not much is listed. I know it is difficult to find a teaching job in Wisconsin, but am I also looking to early? When do schools usually post jobs? Also, will it be easier to find a job in a private school vs. a public school? I am not picky about where in Southeast Wisconsin I will work or what kind of school I work in. Would I be better off to sub to get my foot in the door? At this point, I am beginning to feel hopeless. Any advice or personal experiences anyone could share with me would be helpful!

Also, moving out of state is not an option since my fiance cannot leave his job.

Rebecca It is early to be looking for jobs. Just last week districts were required to let non-tenured teachers know if they would not be renewed. But schools aren't required to let teachers no about layoffs and reductions in FTEs until the end of March. So most school districts right now are in the middle of figuring out how many teachers they will need next year. Additionally, teachers retiring may not have decided yet or let administrators know yet.

Last year I saw stuff start showing up in later March and then come April and May there were additions to WECAN almost daily. And districts are still hiring in June and even July and August. So don't give up hope yet.

The job market in WI is tough for teachers especially depending on your field. ESL is still pretty high in demand as is special education. Maths and sciences are also easier to find jobs in. English and Social studies are really tough to find a job in.

A large number of districts use WECAN so you will find the most openings there. Other than that I used [link removed].

As for subbing vs getting a permanent job, that is completely up to you but realize that subs don't necessarily have an "in" in a district when jobs open up. So if you find a permanent (or even long term sub job) you like, I would take it.

Jenna I forget when exactly teachers have to notify schools of intent to return next year, but I believe it's some time this month or next. Toward the end of the school year and over the summer, a lot of jobs will open up. joe Keep your head up...make sure that you leave no stone uncovered and when you do get the opportunity to interview, you need to look your best and have your answers down pat!!!! You might have to work private or wait until the last minute.
