Why Can’t We Admit Why Most City Schools Are Failing Our Students? An English teacher in suburban Philadelphia was suspended for calling her students ''disengaged, lazy whiners''. I’m not a supporter of her approach, she has active students. However, I believe she was trying to say what so many are unwilling to say because it is not politically correct or they fear of reprisal. Therefore, I’ll say it and let the whining begin. The largest two parts of the equation are the upbringing of the student and the teaching process. These are the top reasons for students not being properly educated (period). I’ll address the larger of these two pieces, upbringing. There, I said it, ouch, OMG, shoot that messenger, you bigot, you uncaring dolt, you bad person, prejudice, prejudice. I can hear it already. As Chairman of the SNAP Foundation I’ve worked in all types of schools from coast to coast. I’ve learned that most teachers are passionate, dedicated, highly skilled, and give every day from their hearts. So let’s stop the BS. In all good schools the equation for success is always the same. Successful students have parents that endow their children with skills, and expectations. They provide a guiding force, teach respect, how to interact with peers, expect manners, do not allow fighting, set bed times, limit TV, cell phones, and internet use. Most importantly they provide constant support and a sense of security to the student. All of these traits have nothing to do with wealth or poverty they are skills that good parents have. However here’s more truth, MOST of the recalcitrant students are being raised by poorly educated parents, grandparents, great grandparents and live in single parent homes. That is so hard to say but if you’re unwilling to admit this you are not willing to solve the problem. These students have poor work habits, homework is not being done, they are disruptive and display poor behavior constantly. They lack basic respect for adults, meaningful consequences, and need strict supervision. In most cases these children started kindergarten already behind and they stayed behind and this progressed over the years. Then anger, boredom, disrespect, contempt, insolence, and impertinence etc. took over and the affect reaches out to all in the classroom and has an effect on everyone. Now multiply this time’s 5 or 10 children in one classroom and you get the picture why success for the majority of students gets to be a very tough goal to reach. If you don’t believe me try visiting almost any classroom in any high school in your school system. Why do certain charter schools succeed when others do not? Could it be that parents expect students to be respectful, meet with the teachers as expected and back the teacher when they say that little Johnny has been a jerk or is failing a subject and needs extra help. Is it because both the parent and child know the consequence of not meeting expectations might mean being tossed out of school? Could it be that student behaviors started when they were babies not when it came time for the child to start school. The problem is fixable if we can get past the politically correct BS and get our top administrators and the Governor to address this. Joe McCarthy was right Look at Rochester NY and all the future democrat garbage being produced by their school district. Didn't NY lose 4 Congressional seats in the last census? I wonder why. All the people are moving from these worker utopias to areas controlled by those evil Republicans.
