My email is: a...See MoreI need help with Reading material. I just took my 8th attempt & did not pass. - Does anyone have readings such as: Running shoes, Catalonia, Citizen Kane. Or anything else, please.- I've been looking everywhere & not getting anything.
1. What's the best way to try out teaching to see if it's a fit for me? I've looked into Teach For America, but its reviews are very polarizing. The most common arguments against the program are that it's overwhelming to be thrown into a low-income neighborhood where academics have never been a priority with little support and that that type of teaching environment isn't really comparable to teaching at a school in a better neighborhood.
2. Should I get my master's degree in education first? Or try to do it while teaching? Does where (school) I get the master's degree matter? I've heard some say that it doesn't matter as long as I have one, but I've also heard that where (geographically) you get it can help you land a job in that area. Lastly, it has even been said that sometimes getting a master's degree can hurt your competitiveness in the job market because it effectively makes you more expensive to hire.
3. I expect to take a pay cut, which I suppose is somewhat offset by the pension system. I've never worked for a company with a pension, so how does one work for California teachers? How badly am I disadvantaged in this pension system for starting later in life?
4. Does my experience in another field matter at all when I'm looking for a job? It could be interesting and make a school's teaching staff more diverse, but at the same time why hire someone older when you can hire someone younger? This idea worries me.
5. What are some things I can do to spruce up my resume? Nothing currently on it is related to teaching. Should I start tutoring? Or?
6. This is kind of a strange question...and I'm not really sure how to ask it or even what I'm really asking...but how big of a "nest egg" or "net worth" should I try to build before I transition to teaching? At the end of the day, I don't want the pressure of bills to be why I work. I want to work because I love teaching. If I need to spend money to buy school supplies for my students, I don't want to have to budget it out and grow resentful towards an underfunded school. Perhaps the question should be how much do I need to "retire" if there's an additional source of income in the form of a teacher's salary?
7. Anything else I forgot to ask or should consider?
Any help on how to pass the essay? This is my 5th time. I'm retaking it next month. Any news about the mentoring program for teachers that didn't pass one of the test?
sunflowerI think the comments is showing up more than once because I hit the summit button more than once. What I did was to hit it once then refresh the page...it worked..
