...See MoreHi everyone. I'm Morgan and I'm in my fourth year of teaching high school science classes. I'm currently in my first of year of teaching Human Anatomy and Physiology at a local community college one night a week. So I have experience in teaching both secondary and adult students although most of them have been my past high school students.
I just found out this past week (Thursday) that I would be moving from my high school class to the Technology Center to teach Anatomy and Physiology to both secondary students and adult students in the same class. The center offers several different medical careers and all students must go through this class before they go into their field choice. The center has both a secondary student handbook and adult student handbook which is a little different but if adult are in a class with secondary students they must follow the secondary student class rules and the rules of the class room teacher including disciplinary policies of each. Cell phones and any electronics will be confiscated if used, seen or heard. Students are not allowed out of classroom without a permission and hall pass. Really basic secondary rules for this class. I'm looking at the grade book it looks like I have 14 secondary and 11 adult in the morning class which last 2 and a half hours and 16 secondary and 8 adults in the afternoon.
So here is my question, has anyone out there had this classroom setting? How do you handle this with both teenagers and adults? I would like to say that adult students behave and follow all of the rules because they are adults and mature and it would never be an issue but I know that is not how it really is. I've asked the teacher that is leaving and she basically told me handle it as a classroom and not the age of the students. However, I'm comfortable handling high school students and their misbehaviors not sure how to do it with adults with the same rule as the secondary students.
I was hoping someone could give me advise on classroom management. I have one student who does not cooperate in the classroom, constantly calls out, walks around the classroom and distracts his fellow peers. He has been given several warning, lunch and after school detentions, diary notes and phones calls to his parents, yet they have not been effective. What are some strategies that i could implement in my classroom to assist with this behavioural issue?
