Chaotic Classroom

I am a special education teacher. I was recently transferred to a new school. My new school had two teachers to quit in December and really needed a sped teacher. The students have been disrespectful, defiant, and non-compliant from the beginning. Students walked into the classroom rearranging the desks and using profanity. They totally disregarded the teacher in the room. When I asked them for their attention, I was met with confrontations. All they seem to want to do is get on their cell phones, gossip, or get on the computer. I have had a difficult time obtaining order and this is my seventh day. These are high school students. Does anyone have any suggestions that will help me to obtain order in this classroom?

Questions Some questions to help understand the situation: what kind of special ed is it? Is it a self-contained class, a resource class or?? Were the teachers who left both from this class? Is there an assistant? How many kids are in this class? How many years experience do you have and how many with this age group?
