In a 2 story great room that opens to the second floor, are area rugs on hardwood enough to absorb the sound or is carpeting a better choice?

We opted for carpet. We attended a Christmas party of a friend with a new home and were really surprised how loud her home was with a small group of people. We built our forever home a little over 2 years ago. It

just me We have 18 foot ceilings open beamed in our family room. We also had this dilemma and opted instead for large area rugs so that we had more options. We are happy with the result. We also had the "silence" padding put under the hardwood floors and that made a huge difference.
