PD Attendees Laughing at Me

Hi everyone, Just venting here--I was at a conference today and was asked to co-facilitate a discussion session with a group of teachers. I was expecting a small group, and it ended up being about 50 people. As I began talking, this teacher in the front row began laughing at me and started writing notes to the person sitting next to her (about me, I'm guessing). He wrote something back to her, and they both smirked looking at me again. It made me feel so uncomfortable and so angry that teachers would treat each other that way. I have a habit of talking kind of fast sometimes, so I am sure that is what struck her as funny, but I am just so upset tonight that I was treated that way. It makes me sad that some teachers act so unprofessional when they are representing their districts. I know teachers and administrators from the district in which she works, and I am so tempted to say something to them, but I know that I just shouldn't take it personally and move on.

I've had it happen to me too (mine were in the front row as well). They weren't laughing at me per se but they did laugh at some of the material I was presenting, calling it "stupid" (the part they were laughing at actually came directly from the new state standards at that time, which they hadn't seen before, and their comments implied that they literally didn't believe that what I was presented were state-mandated standards; they actually laughed and asked if I had made them up myself) and then, because they deemed my material "stupid," spent part of the session discussing unrelated topics among themselves. I did the same thing I would have done if it had been students in a class: used proximity at first, standing closer to them and addressing the presentation to them directly as if they were the only ones I was speaking to at that moment; then asked them to save their social conversations for the break time. I called on them to answer questions. I asked for their input on specific points. And so on. Of course, after the training, they eventually figured out that I was telling them the truth and the material was indeed state- mandated, although by now we've moved on to different standards anyway. I was teaching at the time (still am) and it was an in-house PD session for teachers from other schools in my district. Ironically those teachers and I work at the same school now. I don't know if they remember that incident. I do, and sometimes it still colors what I think of them, but nevertheless we are able to work well together now. Some teachers seem to behave this way as a sign of protest over PD they don't want to attend. (I've never had the same type of issue in voluntary PD, only in PD that they were required to attend.) But ultimately it is the teachers who appear unprofessional in the eyes of their coworkers and ultimately they are truly are the ones losing out.
