Canadian licence teaching wanting to teach in florida

Hello,

I have been teaching for two years now and am looking for a change at the end on this academic year. I would like to move to Florida and teach there. I was wondering what channels can one go about doing this?

flacka Check state board of education website because they usually have the information there. Start preparing now in case there are courses or tests that you need to take. The process usually takes time so it's good that you are looking ahead and getting started now.

Florida is pretty good with reciprocity but there are tests/courses you may have to take depending on courses required in Canada. Many of your questions can be answered at the Florida Department of Education (fldoe.org).

As you may know, there is a teacher shortage and Florida is accepting almost any degree (not necessarily in education) as long as you agree to get certified in the subject area you are teaching. I doubt you would have any wait. Districts begin hiring as early as May for the following year and I know my district allows interviews via phone. In Florida, each county is a school district so choose your county wisely.

Due to the infinite wisdom of our legislature, there is no longer anything in Florida called tenure unless you were grandfathered in like myself. Districts are no longer permitted to have step raises. They are anti-teacher. I'm not trying to be negative but giving you a heads up on what to expect. Our district (Manatee County) is growing by something like 1,000 students per year and can't build schools fast enough leading to large class size. We do have a cap in all core classes but I teach an elective with 35 students.

Remember, you are moving to where many want to be but don't have what it takes to make the leap and we don't care how it's done up north. We do things different in Florida. We hate hearing, how it's done up north! I can't say that enough.

Good luck with this decision. The district you apply to will be able to answer many of your questions because they regularly hire teachers from out of state.
