I'm the grade 1 and grade 2 pull-out/push-in ELL support teacher at a private international school that uses Teacher's College Running Records. The child's is a first grader whose home language is Korean. He doesn't qualify for pull-out support. This kid is super smart and knows a lot of strategies to figure out tricky words, problem is, he is still gaining English vocabulary. He reads fluently at level C now, but he can't pass the running record to go to more challenging books because he is coming across words he doesn't know in English. I only get to work with him about 3 periods over every eight day cycle. Besides previewing/sneak-peak a book to talk about the pictures and front-load any tricky vocab beforehand, what else can I do? I'm not in the class enough to really get a grasp of what words he may not know. Any thoughts?
