How much should a teacher expect to spend, out of pocket, to relocate to an overseas teaching assignment? Europe? Asia? How much of this expense can a teacher expect to be reimbursed for? My husband and I are both teachers...no kids...no pets. Assuming we were both offered jobs...how much should we expect to spend relocating?
Obvi...See MoreExperiences differ apparently. We've seen that the vast majority of teacher's spouses get hired (in Europe and in Japan). Many right away, some within a couple of years. My understanding/experience (and what my admin have told me) is also is that family preference for a DoDEA spouse is on equal footing with military spouse preference.
Obviously there are no guarantees and everyone will have their own story.
How long after accepting a tentative offer does something official come down? What is the time frame until being in place? Do you suppose government budget politicking will stop the ball rolling?
Most people (and HR) do recommend waiting until you have orders/a firm offer before giving official notice at your current job (although having a conversation with your admin is advisable if you have that kind of relationship). It makes sense, even though very few people get rejected at this stage (although it would truly suck to be one of the few after putting all of your eggs in one basket).
HelpOthersWith CHRA in charge the time frame seems even longer than it was a year or so ago. Keep your current job until you have orders and try to help find your replacement so you don't burn any bridges in case you want to return some day.
How many Japanese immersion schools doesn't DoDEA have? I tried looking but the only school I could find was in Okinawa. Are there none in other parts of Japan or around the world?
I'm debating whether I should take the OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) and apply to these dual immersion schools.
Also, will my chances be higher if I apply as a multilingual teacher? Thanks for your help!
hahaThey still have FLES listed and they eliminated that program last year in all schools. So, guess they just haven't gotten around to taking it off. Or, they acknowledge that the powers that be could change their minds about it tomorrow and so why not leave it on there.
hahaYou should be able to submit and choose 20/21 as your availability date. You may still get referrals for this year but you are under no obligation to take an interview if one is offered. Better to submit and see your qualifications as early as possible so you have a chance to fix/add if possible.
I just checked my e-mail and noticed two principals reached out to me for phone interviews? One in Kentucky and the other in Alabama. I thought we would receive notification of interviews through the DoDEA e-mail system? C'mon Jacksonville, NC fingers are crossed. Anyone from NC on here? My cousin who is a teacher said the pay in NC is horrible and to stay where I'm at of course it would be different with the DoDEA but I'm tired of Philthadelphia...LoL!
1) national board certification. I am already doing it anyways ...See MoreI am wondering which of these would most increase my odds of getting INTERVIEWED. I seem to have no problem with referrals but not getting interviews. Background, I have a masters in my field, a variety of trainings, and over 7 years teaching. Which of these should I consider:
1) national board certification. I am already doing it anyways because i live in NC and will get a very nice salary boost from it. I just dont know if it matters for DOD. If it does maybe I'll work on it faster!
2) additional certification in special education K-12. Currently I am certified B-k, and dont really want to teach above that range but I dont think its hard in NC to add that.
3) I was qualified only for Disabled PREK and needed 3 courses for regular PREK. Should I just take those a la carte?
4) other stand alone specialized trainings that are current and relevant? Anything on military families perhaps? I feel like I'm fairly maxed out on trainings but im sure there is something.
HelpOthersIf you love the littles, add preschool. Civilians overseas are not screened through EFMP, so there are some locations with more severe behaviors than others. I agree that while adding sped might get you the referrals, if you don't want to teach older kids it's Murphy's law that you will be required to do so.
I had and interview and just like many of you I am becoming impatient. I can find several posts about how long it might time to receive and offer, but cannot find if they let you know you have not been selected? Will they send you something letting you know either way?
SodaI've received 2 emails telling me I wasn't selected for the job I'm currently in (I think because they were interviewing for a 3rd SLP). The communication can be a little inconsistent.
IbeforeEHi @Soda - I am an SLP trying for a second year now. I was wondering what you meant saying ". . . interviewing for a 3rd SLP???) Anyone else on this board know how many SLP positions were filled this round and where? TIA
Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide.
I am wondering what my chances are in attaining a full-time teaching position as a local hire if I join my partner in Okinawa.
Some background: I hold an state teaching license and a bachelor's degree in Elementary and Exceptional Student Education (special ed). I have seven years of experience, five teaching and two working as an instructional coach. I am working on a master's in educational administration. I have taught internationally for four years in South Korea and now Colombia, but in private, international schools, not DODEA. I have filled out my online application from DODEA EAS, but hear that this process can take years.
My partner has been stationed in Okinawa for some months and will be there for the next two and a half years. We plan to get married this winter. Initially, I thought that our marriage would allow me to claim spousal preference, but it appears this only applies if you are married before you get orders.
We are now faced with the very difficult decision of whether I should accept another two year international teaching contract elsewhere, or if I have a good shot of attaining a teaching position in Okinawa. Unfortunately the international school hiring season wraps up in the beginning of February, so I only have a few months to decide.
What do you think the odds are? What might you do if you were me?
HelpOthersWhen married, the orders can be updated. You can only get SOFA status if you are on orders. You can only stay 90 days on visitor visa without orders. If trying to be hired as local hire, I suggest requesting the orders be amended.
Just out of curiosity, what is the average amount of time one should remain hopeful for getting an interview request after a referral during the active school year?
SodaIt took about 9 months before I got an interview and about a month after that before I received a tentative offer. Then I suddenly ended up on several referral lists all at once. It can take a while, so don't get discouraged.
