Does anyone know if taking a position in Guam or Puerto Rico, being US territories, keeps you from being hired later as a CONUS hire and receiving LQA in the foreign post?
TeachinMaybe something in Japan :) I was in Japan for 3 months when I was in high school and loved the culture and the food. I think it would be a great place to live!
This is my first year applying. I have ten years teaching 6-12 math. I am looking forward to getting another call soon. I am taking the approach that dodea needs math teachers just like the rest of the world.
CaliBredWow! Message on Friday, too late on the following Monday. That hurts!! Lesson learned!! Next time I will stop mid-sentence in class if I have to. I will become the teacher that other students have told me about, who answers their phone during class, or is seen outside their door on a call. :) Thanks for your advice.
Would love to hear from anyone teaching Preschool disabled (hate that term!). Are you teaching self-contained, integrated itinerant? Also, our adult son is looking at grad school in Europe, which may or may not end up near us. Can we bring adult children with? He would probably just stay with us between semesters.
HelpOthers@SLPnyc it is possible. Just make sure your EAS is active. You can keep an eye out on USAJobs.org, but SLP positions are rarely posted there.

My goal is to apply for an overseas post in three years time. At that point in time I will fit into the pay scale category of 6 years of middle school teaching (Gifted & Pre-AP in Geometry and Algebra) with a Masters and 30 plus credits (MBA and MS in Mathematics Teaching).
Are the payroll costs (e.g. higher starting salary) a consideration in the hiring process? Are individual schools impacted by these costs or is it a centralized administrative line item?
mathisfun@haha. Noted, years of teaching experience +1 added to my analysis. Starting a new post Benefits - DODEA vs. Teaching in TX. Thank you haha and everyone who posted here to help a fellow teacher with wanderlust.
HelpOthers@mathisfun, keep in mind if you accept a DoDEA position within the USA or Puerto Rico or Guam (?) your pay is on a different payscale and that pay scales starts with step 0 and allows up to 5 years of non-DoDEA teaching experience, so starting step would be step 5 if you have 5 or more years of experience.
...See MoreI am creating a spreadsheet to compare the benefits of working for DODEA vs those of my present teaching job in TX. (Spouse's pay now vs. no job = no pay scenario on move is factored in). Pay with DODEA is $7510 more than what I currently make. Can someone help me build out my model?
1. Is there a free medical and/or dental plan?
2. LQA - Is it a set amount, allowing for saving money to pay for other expenses? E.g. Benefit of $3500 per month and rental costs $3000, therefore saving $500 per month.
3. COLA - Is it 2.8% of gross pay in 2019?
4. CSRS - ? Not sure if this option is available, and if choosing this option prevents FERS enrollment.
5. FERS- Basic (1% per service year, tec.), Social Security, TSP (up to 14%, govt match up to 5%)
6. I imagine Federal Tax rate is unchanged regardless of where I reside.
In Japan, near Tokyo, my family of 4's post allowance/COLA is about $400 per pay period, so about $800 per month for the family. So, it almost pays our grocery bill (maybe not including all the subscribe and save from Amazon). If we had a family of 3 it would only go down about $60 (you can use the calculators to get an estimate), not a full 1/4 of the allowance.
Here, many people pay out of pocket for dental and vision, because it is not expensive on the economy unless you have problems with your teeth.
Stateside, the cost of living is built into the base pay, which is why some areas pay more than others. Your housing and moving expenses are not paid and you do not have access to the commissary or exchange (store on base) even if you are permitted to live on base/post, but Walmart is cheaper anyway.
HelpOthersThey tend to only hire for overseas positions from CONUS if they are full-time positions. so a PSCD teacher might have a morning and afternoon class, or might teach PSCD half-day and be ESL or Reading specialist or sped LIMM teacher, etc. the other half depending on certs.
IcanreadDonna - I'm going to go hunt you down on the Facebook page "Dodds Teachers Living the Okinawa Dream." It will be easier to answer your questions that way!
