1. I've been told that the hiring window is late March to August; I understand that I may or may not receive a job within that time-frame, so at what point should I consider job openings elsewhere? I would very much like to work with the DoDEA, but I'd also like steady employment.
2. Any interview tips? Are they mostly over the phone? I've only done in-person interviews, and I'm a bit nervous about doing it over the phone without referring to a portfolio or something.
3. Can family members who aren't a spouse or children travel with you?
4. Do DoDEA employees live on a base, or must they find housing off-base? Just curious. :)
Many people are in the system for years before they get an interview/offer. Many people never get interviews/offers. So, given that, you should be considering job openings beyond DoDEA now and until you have an offer in hand, with DoDEA being a Plan B, dream goal, etc. There are just too many factors beyond your control and too many applicants for too few positions to put all (or even most) of your eggs in the DoDEA basket.
That is especially true this year since 300+ teachers were excessed for various reasons and all of them need to be placed before they consider state side hiring.
Interviews are done by telephone. Often you would get an email from a principal to set up a day/time but sometimes they just call out of the blue. Phone interviews are fine once you get used to it. You can have your own notes, portfolio etc. ready to refer to if it makes you more comfortable. There are a lot of standard interview questions that get asked by DoDEA principals and we re-post them from time to time.
Anyone beyond a spouse or child would need special permission/documentation to be on your orders, get on base, stay in housing with you etc. Generally that would include you showing that they are financially dependent on you. Some of the details vary according to the location you would be going to.
On base/off base varies wildly by location and can change over time. Many/most locations have teachers live off base. Some give teachers the option. A few require on base but again it changes over time.
I got 14 emails friday to remind me to renew my EAS application. I'm guessing the logarithm is set to send 1 renewal reminder email for every 20 emails I have sent them last year.
Life has been exciting this week. I got my firm offer on Wednesday and received my official passport on Thursday. I fly out March 1 (tentative offer was received Oct 4).
Headed to Okinawa.
lol, I was excited to post the news, then the sure was down all week. Whua, whua.
It would be nice if we could get some type of explanation when the site is down for days at a time (and maybe some hopeful reassurance that it could stop happening in the near future) :D :S :(

After almost 5 entire months, I have come out the other side and am finally expecting orders sometime soon! I received my passports today, so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how soon I can get a pack out of HHG after I receive orders?
The people who own my house that I'm renting are selling it and they close today. I have 1 week to vacate. My HR rep told me my report date would be the 10th and my fly date the 8th. I know these are flexible about 7 days either way, but do you think it would be possible to pack out in this amount of time? Before I have to pack myself out and put everything in storage?
Hello all! It has been almost 4 weeks since my investigation was sent to the OPM. Is this normal? It seems like a long time after looking at some of the timelines I've seen. HR has not been helpful-- in fact my rep was borderline rude. Does anyone have any advice on this? Or any timelines of their own? This is for an overseas position. Thank you!
Couple of QuestionsI can't remember how long it took my husband's to go through (I have the dates saved somewhere), but I'm a sub and mine was submitted at the end of one school year (late April, early May) and it didn't come back until after the next school year started in October. And I'm prior military and still had an active clearance. UGH!
If you read through this forum, you will quickly learn that DoDEA has had some major changes recently, and it may be a while before they start hiring for next school year.
CassandraThank you Icanread. I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss the email already. I have stepped off this site for a few months and popped back on recently and have been trying to read through all the changes. I don't know that I understand them all but I'm trying!THANKS!
A one year sanction shouldn't affec...See MoreI have heard of this happening to people before. I know have/heard of several people who went ahead and took the DoDEA position. In some cases the state/district didn't bother to follow through. In another, the state did go ahead with some type of sanction but it didn't affect their standing with DoDEA.
A one year sanction shouldn't affect anything with DoDEA, especially if you have already passed the screening, background check, etc.. The only time I have heard of possible ramifications were if the person used the state cert to reduce the requirements for DoDEA, and even then, in this case you would not be losing the state cert, only having some type of temporary freeze put on it.
Odds are it won't have an impact and if this is your dream, then my two cents would be to just keep going forward. This is why some people get a 2nd certification in another state to have as a backup, just in case. It's an investment in time and money but could be worth it for some people to have peace of mind.
I will be moving forward and will also be getting certified in another state. I know it is a bit of a process but will be worth it!
I have been told by my current district and school that I am the first they will be doing this to. I think they have had too many leave this year and hope to discourage others. I am disappointed but understand their predicament. I would rather not be the first in this though...
I am very excited to join the school I am heading to. I have heard from many staff members and have been welcomed warmly! I feel this is the right thing to do even though it is causing some turmoil. I will share all the details once I am settled in. Thanks again haha!
There's a bunch of new ISS positions posted on USA jobs for anyone who might be interested. I know it's not a job for everyone, but if you've been a coach in a school or worked at a district level, it might be for you.
1.) one of the explicit, if somewhat unspoken purposes of creating the ISS positions was so that during the next major funding debacle, cuts could be made to the above-school level without impacting the people that matter ( sup., ass't sup., community sup., chief of staff, etc.)...and winter is coming.
2.) most of the DoDDS ISSes placed at the DSO's have had a short tenure in their positions- i.e. they ingratiated themselves and got MDR's (management directed reassignment) to a principalship or other school-level position. This was so pronounced for several years that it has become exceedingly difficult to leave the position, and your PDS is not a school, so you can't move into a mid year opening in your complex. This is now having the effect that more than a few ISSes are trapped for perpetuity playing the game of pleasing our betters rather than serving kids and families, leading to more disharmony at the DSO's.
3.) unless you are on teacher pay, there is diminishing benefit to an ISS gig with a 222 contract and longer work day. In some instances you are working for less.
Summary: the ISS jobs are looking less and less like a foot-in-the-door to a school level position and should likely only be accepted by someone who has less interest in kids and schools and more interest in the politics of the DSO, who is willing to stay in a given location for.......
