SanDiego Tom - the question were very practical questions. What tests were I familiar administering. What age were the students I have worked with, how organized am I, how was I at writing reports, etc. Nothing philosophical. It was short (about 20 min of them asking me questions and about 10 minutes of me asking them questions). It felt like it was over before it got started.
I just want to say that this chatboard has been an amazing source of information. I'm writing because I am looking to get a feel of what you think the chance might be of me getting an opportunity to interview next year. (I know that asking for a job would be a bit much at this point in time).
I'm a High School Social Studies Teacher with 5 years under my belt, I'm ESL trained and certified with having taught 2 different AP classes (Government & Psychology while also trained in US History) as well as Dual Credit US History through a local University. I have taught level US History, World Geography, Psychology and Sociology. I have been a UIL coach for 7 different events including Social Studies, Accounting and Essay writing; on the Homecoming/Prom Committee (both) and NHS sponsor for 1 year now. I have a Master degree in History and a Master Certificate in Second Language instruction. I'm fluent in English and Spanish and can speak conversational Japanese.
I would really like to work for DODD, like most people here, and am looking to find ways to boast my attractiveness to principals for the 2019-2020 school year. I don't think I could confidently pass any other content area but would be interested in trying if it meant that I could get a job with DODD (especially in Japan. All of you guys who got a job in Japan, I am super jealous!) This summer I'm also looking to add AP Human Geography, but that might still be up in the air.
Please let me have any advice that you might have,
All of the other things you mention beyond certs could be useful if you make to a referral list/interview and need to show you are active in the school environment, promoting student achievement beyond the classroom etc.
All in all, you sound like you are in as a good a position as anyone in your area, especially if your are open to any most locations.
If it's a referral list, then the system is "supposed" to notify you once the position has been filled but this is often not until the selected candidate has gone through the entire process and gotten a firm offer/orders, which could be months. And, often the notification just never comes.
If you are talking about something directly from a principal then generally they would follow up with you either with an interview or letting you know they decided not to interview you/for the position. Once interviewed though you generally will not hear anything unless you are selected and then you would likely get an email from HR with a tentative offer.
hahaJust make certain that your email is correct on your EAS since that is where the principal would get your contact information (and make sure nothing is going to spam). Some principals also just prefer to cold call, rather than email to set up a time for some reason.
tony75Been there, done that. If you try to overwrite a previously updated document, it won't work. You need to first delete the old one from within the "attachments" section of the application. Then go through the process of uploading a new document by filling out the info that goes with it into the forms, and re-uploading. And Bob's your uncle!
Is it me or is the on-line application, uh, funky? Seems like I am never done, and I have never had a problem with any other on -line application. I suppose I am whining.
hahaIt's fairly comprehensive. I've done much worse for some international schools that weren't click and fill and had glitches, forms that wouldn't fill or format right. But yes, you are whining. :D
hahaYes, it's not much fun applying for a loan when your SF-50 says "temporary seasonal" employee and trying to explain that it doesn't mean what it sounds like.
I'm wondering if it's appropriate to contact priincipals, to state your interest, if you've been placed on their referral list? I receive referral notifications all the time but I don't get calls for interviews.
I'm also wondering if DoDea principals have to give approval for an overseas move?
hahaThat is a little unusual that you have gotten more attention for the elementary than for the SPED. Most principals (but not all obviously) will be looking for something in addition to the LIMM to give themselves more options/flexibility. Another SPED category would be great but ES is also good.
I received my orders and will a report date to Kadena MS on 29 October. I will be teaching 6th grade social studies and too excited for words.
My rough timeline
Interview: 2 August
Tentative Offer: 8 August
Paperwork/BG Check/Physical/Passports: 10 August to 15 September
Firm Offer: 28 September
Orders to get to Okinawa by 29 October
Anyway... I'm getting things in order right now. Sold my house, about to sell my car (you can't take it with you), and waiting on my TMO date to move household goods...
My big question is about transportation around Okinawa and is off base housing close enough to ride my bike vs getting a car. I've seen some cool places in Yomitan which fits my LQA. Is that too far for public transportation?
I really do not want to get a car... unless I have to.
When I was stationed in Germany, I did not buy a car or really drive short of a Humvee or tracked vehicle.
What should I do? Can I rely on public transportation to get me to base? Do some teachers carpool? Will a pedal bike get me where I need to go? Sorry for the million questions. Thank you all! Stoked to be part of the DoDEA family!
IcanreadYes.. you will need a car here. You could get by without one, but it rains a lot here! Go find the Facebook page "Dodds teachers living the Okinawa dream" - lots of people there can help you answer questions. There are lots of Dodds teachers in Yomitan. Congrats!! Welcome to Oki!!
