LiteracyRocksIn a recent visit, Mr. Brady told us that there is going to be a big improvement in HR and the hiring process, due to some changes being made in who handles the hiring of new DODEA employees.
IsItFriday?Mr Brady said he was going to fix this issue four years ago. He failed. He was unable to fix his own HR department. So instead of continuing to try to fix the unfixable he will outsource the HR role to another government agency.
I'm shipping my car to Camp Humphrey's South Korea soon. Should I cancel my auto insurance before it ships or when it gets to South Korea when I get different insurance? Also, how did you prep your car before shipping? I've had it inspected, oil changed, 4 new tires, etc. Is there anything else I need to have done?
JoseJust remember that as long as the system is confusing to the candidate management is free to choose whomever they prefer for whatever reason. The only restraint on this would be a 3rd party accountability review.
IsItFriday? In weak moments of arrogant transparency Admin types have been overheard stating boastfully that veteran's preference can be easily circumvented.
JoseAs long as population grows, staffing will be a community aging issue and a transmigration issue primarily. Over staffing of schools is an impoverished management issue also but only on a grander scale.
Couple of QuestionsMy husband's the teacher, so he had his done somewhere different than the kids and I. We just went to Kroger (supermarket, chain that includes including Ralphs, Fry's, King Soopers and Food 4 Less) and had it done at the clinic there. We just went in, showed 'em the paperwork, and asked them to write the statement at the top. No problems.
Do we accrue both annual leave and sick leave, or just sick leave? I know we're seasonal employees with built-in time off, but as long as I've worked for the feds, they've been strict about not saying you're out sick when your car broke down, etc.
Agree that admin days are often granted for activities required for you to ...See MorePrincipals (and school secretaries) seem to have/use discretion with authoring sick/leave days. I would think it would be very rare for DoDEA teachers to use personal days for conferences or workshops, as opposed to personal matters that are not medically related.
Agree that admin days are often granted for activities required for you to do your job/get settled in.
WA_CounselorI emailed the HR Specialist to ask if the two weeks of annual leave I currently have accrued would transfer over or if I need to use it prior to the transfer, but she hasn't gotten back to me.
The RAT is one year, meaning that next summer you will get a trip home for you and your family.
A RAT is not the same as a contract. There really is no contract. That's simply a poor choice of words. There is a negotiated agreement between DoDEA and the Bargaining Unit. You start as Probationary, and then you become Permanent (unless you are a screw up), and you work until you retire or drop dead (quite a few do.)
I see it being a hard go in DoDEA. I don't know how it is where you are but my experience has been that in most cases/subject areas they are rarely around and are mostly known via a few emails about resources/websites or the odd training (which they attend, but generally do not actually conduct). Even if they were/able to be in schools/classes more, I just don't see DoDEA teachers being super receptive to coaching (although I don't have a lot to base that on I guess).
People often take ISS positions as a stepping stone into Admin and beyond (Superintendent.) They are often people who are fleeing the classroom. They love education so much that they want to step out if the classroom (and get way from students) to help inspire others to love teaching.
There's a certain element which recognizes and is unhappy that teaching does not have a career path. Many people who take ISS positions want to have a career.
Quite a few of our recent ISS hires are very dynamic despite their relative lack of experience in the classroom. This is code for young, and is a less than subtle form of age discrimination.
The actual job has little to do with the description, and many ISSs find themselves working outside of their areas and/or working on constantly changing, random projects, that never get completed and have no importance. Many become Kings and Queens of the PPT, and are constantly being tasked to create PPTs for some District level meeting.
Once in an ISS position, the most important qualities are the ability to say yes agreeably, and to constantly cheerlead for any new initiative, no matter how outdated or ludricous. An ISS generally thinks that every idea from the Director or the Superintendent is a great one.
As an ISS you will be expected to instantly spin how a teacher can teach a particular course, without the adopted text, or why none of the students ever fail (we have an above average population.)
In private it is acceptable to admit "well, yes, we have a few problems in that area, but HQ is working on it."
Take care. Know what you're walking into and prepare a back-up plan before accepting any poistion on the Dark Side.
On the plus side you'll be golden when HQ eliminates the current teacher contracts, and imposes their own draconian version. Hmmmm...take the ISS position. Smart move!
So I have an EDS which DODDS does not recognize but DDESS does. The pay is 13 Gs less to go to DODDS... if I were to get a job at Ramstein would the COLA and housing make up for that? I'm a little worried that I would be taking too big of a hit. I have a family of 7 (including me).
