I am qualified in several areas and looking to add a few hours to be qualified in some others. Does anyone know what level the classes must be to count towards qualifying? Has anyone taking University of Phoenix classes? I wasn't sure if it had to be graduate level classes or if bachelors level would work. Thanks.
IcanreadI've taken University of Phoenix classes. They are quite pricey compared to webteaching.com. But webteaching may not offer the classes you need.
hahaThey do happen but are relatively rare compared to many other positions. Often, current teachers like to be considered for those positions when they want to stay with DoDEA but maybe get a break from the classroom (and they have the correct certs of course).
I would say maybe a few each year go to stateside hiring.
HelpOthersPositions are not posted, so unless we know personally of announced positions our our own districts, we don't know. Positions are usually posted internally before being filled from outside the local area.
Basically the more you can do to clean up or at least address issues (e.g. payment plans, settlements, forbearance, etc), the least likely it is to hold you back.
I appreciate your replies. Thanks for the heads up about the long wait for well qualified teachers. As far as state cert, I still have to complete a professional experience or internship (unpaid/recent and supervised) and complete the Praxis tests. I am thisclose to just writing off the whole ordeal. Everything I have done has been towards advancing my goal of getting into DoDDS schools, getting my coursework piecemeal as finances have permitted (and they have largely NOT permitted), living on peanuts, scraping by. And now, a years (more) long wait ahead of me, if the trend you mentioned is indeed going to continue.
HelpOthersDo not give up. You have made it this far. Keep plugging away. You may want to try to get a stateside job in a location where they are hiring teachers before they are certified, so you can start getting classroom experience that much sooner. However, if you are in a good program and like where you work, just stick to what you have been doing.
Just received an unsolicited interview request via email from their Community Superintendent -- not through EAS. My question for the Chatboard: "Is Naples expected to be an enduring post?" Otherwise, I am in still in China for my final year of qualifying to be an American Chinese Language Endorsed teacher for Alaska. Thank you for your inputs.
HelpOthersI mean to say that I believe it is an enduring post, but even if it is not, another position would be found for you if the one you have is not longer needed.
HelpOthersIf they have a K-6 position to fill, they may at that point check to see if you are qualified. However, people living in the local community often have this certification, so being sent overseas for a K-6 is more rare than for other positions, but not impossible.
WaitingOnDoDEAThank you so much, this is the site I applied on. The job I applied for through USA jobs, specifically said to apply through USA jobs. Either way, I am qualified on EAS for the same job field, as well as general education jobs.
As for turnover, there is some with DoDEA. Many teachers seem to stay a long time with DoDEA but teachers do leave, retire and move between schools. In general, there seemed to be around 200 openings every year in DoDEA schools in past years.
After two years you are considered permanent by DoDEA which is equivalent to tenure in most states.
You will be credited up to 5 years of teaching experience in the stateside DoDEA schools, so you could start on step 5 if you have the employment verification forms completed to reflect your experience.
At step 5, there are also different pay scales based on education: Bachelors or Masters, +15, +30, EDS, Doctorate.
However, unlike overseas, Stateside is still refusing to accept credit hours prior to the degree. So, for example, I took 3 graduate credit hours prior to my Masters. Then, the program changed and that class was no longer required - I had to take a different one instead. These 3 hours were not included in my MA or my BA, so they in addition to the 27 hours I earned after my Masters should have put me at the MA +30 pay scale. However, this Salary Lane change request was refused. On the other hand, when I went overseas, it was not even a question. e
When the time is right for you to move overseas, if you have been working in DoDEA, those years will count in addition to the non-DoDEA years for steps. Additionally, overseas accepts up to 10 years of experience, so you would start on step 11 (step 1 is the first year, unlike stateside where 0 is the first year) plus how ever many years you work in DoDEA. This helped me, because I started stateside with 10 years experience then moved overseas after working with DoDEA for a few years. I started overseas at step 15 if I recall.
