Make sure the phone number on your application is the one you can answer all the time and have it ON. If you list a home phone number, even if it is also with a cell number, don't be surprised to find a missed message and by the time you reach the person, the position may no longer be available.
Make sure you check your e-mail regularly too, as you may receive a request through e-mail or even your e-mail calendar.
HI All! I recently applied for a special education teacher or assessor position with the DODD. I was just wondering what timeline do they follow? I know my references were sent the forms almost immediately. What happens from here? I applied for most European bases. Thanks in advance!

The bulk of interviewing for overseas happens June-August with some possibly coming as early as May and as late as October (with a few more positions being filled between then and January).
As for what happens from here, you might make some referrals lists (meaning a principal has pulled a list of potential interviewees), might get an email/call for an interview, or might not. Some people get hired quickly, some wait years and some never do. SPED and Assessor are generally good areas to have. Has HR told you what areas they considered you qualified in?
I think employees still have an opportunity to be moved within district. After all those moves occur, principals may be given permission to start filling official vacancies.
You can also upload a resume to USA Jobs and be ready to update it if you ever see a posting for a position (rare for most teaching/assessor positions).
hahaDoDEA teachers in PR do get COLA (or at least they do the last I heard about it). PR and Guam are the only two non-foreign country locations that qualify for COLA (as I recall).
HelpOthersIf you look at the pay scale for Puerto Rico, it is higher than the others, because the cost of living difference is already included in the pay. I think you can live on base, like in the States and pay your own rent.
We are essentially public school teachers with the differences being that we work for the Dept. of Defense, are not under the Dept. of Education (nat'l or state) and our student population is determined by the military powers that be, not who lives within our school boundary area. I've been a public school teacher in two states in the US, and I have also taught in a few different international schools. In my opinion/experiences (which will likely vary from others) the job of a teacher is basically the same in many/most schools and environments. Some type of planning, followed by some type of instruction, followed by some type of assessment, then repeat and adjust as necessary.
For me, a huge part of my area (SPED) is establishing/building and maintaining a positive relationship with my students which then allows me to prod, pull and nudge them without getting a lot of push back and negativity from them.
Learning/knowing your subject, being excited about it and figuring out a way to meld your personality and style with effective methods of teaching your content and making it interesting and engaging in some way.
The DoDEA piece comes into based on whatever initiative/curriculum/assessments etc are being used/pushed out at any given moment. You then have to find a way to take that into account with your planning, instruction etc (or at least enough of it so that no one is bothering you as you go ahead and do what you feel is best for your students as a competent professional).
The other piece that is a little different is the fact that the majority of your students have active duty military parents. So, you do need to be aware that students may have to deal with a parent being down range, deployed for extended periods of time, be distracted/excited/absent due to a parent returning home/getting leave etc. You also have to take into account that you (and everyone) is there supporting the mission but the students are really the only ones not there by choice.
I'm sure there is more to it than I'm thinking about off the top of my head (in addition to the fact that we are being well paid and supported to be able to live, travel and enjoy life overseas :D).
Can we talk about health insurance? I am overwhelmed by all of the options. If you wouldn't mind sharing, please share which options you think are the best and why.
ScholarLiteracyrocks, depends on the post. I'm lucky that my prime didn't go to standard it went to some other name and I'm covered on base as I always have been but it was made clear not all overseas posts have that luxury.
HelpOthersLiteracyRocks, I suggest another primary insurance with Tricare as your secondary, but you can check for coverage in the area you are being assigned before deciding.
HelpOthersYes (agree with Scholar). As for vacancies. They will not be announced publicly unless the applicants are not in EAS for the position (unlikely). If someone happens to see it posted for their district only, they can let you know at that stage, but this is still not that point where principals would be looking in EAS.
0423 Teacher, Moderately/Severely Lear...See MoreI'm a special education teacher, with a Masters degree in special education. There appears to be five different endorsements under special education for the DoD, which are:
0415 Assessor (Special Education)
0417 Teacher, Severe/Multiple Disabilities
0420 Mildly Learning Imp
0423 Teacher, Moderately/Severely Learning Imp
0427 Emotionally Impaired
After they evaluated my certification and transcripts, they only qualified me under "Mildly Learning Imp." As I work to get other endorsements, does anyone know which Special Ed endorsements have the most demand?
I just wanted to write to let you know I finished the math class at Grand Canyon and am now qualified as of today in all three areas of LIMM, VI, and English. Thank you so much for the recommendation of GCU. Without you telling me about Grand Canyon it would have been difficult to find a class with that exact title. Happy Holidays!
southernteachYes it is all showing. All 3 areas. I emailed HR back in January and they confirmed my app was active and ready and I have been on a couple referral lists already but not for overseas yet. Thanks Mary!
