I just got word that I am "not qualified" because I took an alternate teacher certification program and do not have the courses required. I need 9 credit hours. Does anyone know of any online courses that I can take? Which institutions can you recommend? I am hoping to find courses that do not cost too much money.
Check your transcripts. You may actually have more luck getting certified in something else. Maybe SS? Psychology? If you can test into a state certification (FL used to allow this) then you would only need half of the normally required hours.
Just a thought. Otherwise it sounds as though you would need to start taking some classes and chipping away at what they want if you ever want to get in with DoDEA.
hahaThere are a lot of online options available. I went with Grand Canyon for my Masters. These people offer some of the specific classes they are likely looking for:
Mrs Supinger was my third grade teacher at Elmendorf AFB in 1978. She inspired me to be a teacher and I would love to contact her to tell her how much she had an impact on me.

It's more likely that you do not get any communication after the referral unless you get a chance to interview.
As for how long after a referral might you hear about an interview? Could be hours. Could be never. Generally it seems to betweens days or weeks.
MeganEven if you are applying for overseas (currently located in the US) will the interview requests still come as late as the end of the school year (May and June)?
Thank you all for your responses. This is extremely helpful!
Yes, DoDEA will still look for people when it is not convenient to resign and move your family to another country and many people will still take the offer.
I was wondering do the D.O.D teachers have a different Common Core than Civilian Common Core? If so, can I get that curriculum from Travis Air Force Base in Fair field, California?
ErinAnd it will have everything like the common core on it? Or will it be individual links? like one link for math another fro science? Thank you again.
somedayIt's one link for each subject area. So you have to go back to the curriculum main page, click on the subject, and then click on standards. There will be either a list of each grade level or like the ELA all the k-5 in one file.
I am trying to become a DOD teacher. I am currently working on my B.A to get my credentials. I am in the process of getting hours and experience of what a teacher does. I was wondering is there any difference between a DOD teacher and a civilian teacher?
For me, a huge part of my area (SPED) is establishing/building and maintaining a positive relationship with my students which then allows me to prod, pull and nudge them without getting a lot of push back and negativity from them.
Learn/know your subject, be excited about it and figure out a way to meld your personality and style with effective methods of teaching your content and making it interesting and engaging in some way.
The DoDEA piece comes into based on whatever initiative/curriculum/assessments etc are being used/pushed out at any given moment. You then have to find a way to take that into account with your planning, instruction etc (or at least enough of it so that no one is bothering you as you go ahead and do what you feel is best for your students as a competent professional).
The other piece that is a little different is the fact that the majority of your students have active duty military parents. So, you do need to be aware that students may have to deal with a parent being down range, deployed for extended periods of time, be distracted/excited/absent due to a parent returning home/getting leave etc. You also have to take into account that you (and everyone) is there supporting the mission but the students are really the only ones not there by choice.
I'm sure there is more to it than I'm thinking about off the top of my head (in addition to the fact that we are being well paid and supported to be able to live, travel and enjoy life overseas :D).
ErinI can relate both my parents are retired Air force. I don't really remember much. I can understand it can be hard fort he kids, since they kinda don't really understand. Depends on the kid. I love traveling and since I was 9 I've wanted to be a teacher, so 18 years.
If you are permanent (not on 2 year Provisional Status) DoDEA must find you a position somewhere in the world. Often they will place teachers who are still on Provisional Status but are not required to by contract.
In the case that the school is not closing it often happens when student population goes down or the need for a specific content area declines. For example, if the school decides they only need (or will be authorized) for 3 SS teachers and have 4 on staff then someone will need to be excessed. Sometimes they ask for volunteers in case someone is wanting to move and is willing to take their chances with where they end up. If no one volunteers, then the person with the most recent service date (has been with DoDEA the least amount of time) will generally be excessed.
It can a little more complicated than that of course. For example, the 4th SS teacher might also have an ELA certification and one of the ELA teachers might have a more recent service date than the 4th SS teacher. If that is the case then it is not always clear cut who should be excessed and sometimes the union has to be involved.
Most teachers seem to go their whole career without ever being excessed. I've known others who have been excessed several times.
In theory, if DoDEA ever had way more teachers than could be reasonably placed or parked, they could have a Reduction In Force where they simply say they cannot find a place for everyone and send people back to their HoR. It has happened stateside but not overseas (knock on wood), or at least not in recent memory (and there have been years when multiple schools have closed/shrunk at once). In those years DoDEA has offered monetary incentives for people to retire or separate to help increase places to put the excess staff.
TheShadowThanks, haha! As I have noticed on this site, you are always helpful and give good information on those who are searching for answers. Thanks again!
I have a question that I am sure has been asked here before, but here it goes anyway. How do these points work? I mean how do you get points? What are they based on? Does someone have a breakdown of the categories? Are there categories? I know that was more than one question, but I need answers!

My understanding is that competency points are a result of some combination of your answers on the skills/activities/additional experience information areas of your EAS, your level of education and your years of experience.
Happy to hear if someone else has other ideas/information.
