So...how does this work? I buy insurance through the gov and use it on base? Use it at local hospitals? Not buy it at all and use local facilities and pay out of pocket? I'm lost.
hahaThe insurance you can sign up for and pay premiums for can be used on base and off base. On base they will take it and file with insurance directly. Off base you sometimes have to pay out of pocket and file for reimbursement. Our insurance (FEHB) is good about reimbursing within a few weeks.
The title pretty much says it all. If I get a job and apply for my official passport, I'm assuming my spouse, who would be traveling on a foreign passport (green card holder) would do nothing, is that correct? Or do I need to get some additional paperwork for her? Thank you!
1. Are teachers receive any extra money for housing?
2. Is there a possibility to be able to transfer within the country to other bases/locations? If so, how easy is this?
3. Is there preference given to spouses of teachers who also would like to work for DOD? My husband is a truck driver. Are there any truck driving opportunities? I think we will most likely end up in Fort Campbell.
4. Are we allowed to shop in the base grocery store, or is it just for the military families?
5. I am enrolled in a Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, where after 10 years teaching for a non-profit school, my loans will be forgiven... is the DODEA eligible (meaning, are they non-profit) and/or are there any other loan forgiveness programs available for DODEA teachers?
6. I eventually would like to become an administrator. Are there many opportunities for advancement?
7. Will my Florida teaching certificate expire, or is there a way to renew through the DoDEA?
2. From my understanding no. But, we often see emails with openings only available for current DoDEA overseas so I would assume (and have heard) that this also happens stateside.
3. I know there is a family preference overseas that also applies to non-teaching jobs I don't know if it is true for stateside. I would imagine there are jobs for your husband but it's a totally different situation than overseas. The candidate pool is much larger, but then again off base jobs are also much more plentiful and available.
4. Access to base facilities varies from base to base but often the answer is not really.
5. PSLF also works at DoDEA overseas schools so there is a good chance it would work with stateside DoDEA. I'm not aware of any other loan forgiveness programs for DoDEA teachers.
6. Every school has at least one admin and there are a lot of schools. There is a separate application system/track for admin positions.
7. Your FL cert is separate from DoDEA. DoDEA will issue their own certificate which needs credit hours for renewal. Some teachers keep their stateside cert active. Many let it expire.
Am I able to drive with an American driver's license in Germany? Or do I have to switch it to a German one? Also, my spouse used to (2 yrs. ago) have German passport, now she only has the American passport, does anyone know if she can seek employment in Germany? Or can she only work on post? TIA
ScholarI'm sorry you've been given wrong information-- you may rent a car out in town without the useur license. You may not rent on base without one. Elvato, our secretary shares a link with the driving handbook
I am worried about getting a positive reference from my current supervisor who is new (less than one year). After a few decades in district, I may be applying at the wrong time :-( I am not sure if I will be able to make contact with previous supervisor(s) even if this would be allowed. Is this a deal breaker for getting a job with DoDEA?
Do i have to leave my subaru behind? How do people manage with little ones with out a car there for the first few days/weeks? Any help will be appreciated!
hahaMy understanding is that the applicant is the one that gets the full background check since you are the only one that submits fingerprints, EQIP etc.. That doesn't mean that they do zero looking into family members I suppose.
Anyone know what my chances of getting transferred out of Guam to another Dodds location would be? How long before one could transfer? Any other pros/cons about Guam would be greatly appreciated.
lovelylou@ haha Can I still be an active applicant with DODDS while working for DDESS on Guam? If teaching in Guam, would I be considered a Guam taxpayer or considered a taxpayer from my home state?
As for taxes, you may have to file Guam and federal returns but generally would not have to pay double taxes. I'm not sure if you would be liable for state taxes from your previous location (sometimes DoDEA teachers assigned overseas still pay state taxes if their HoR is a state with state income tax). Maybe someone who is/has actually been assigned there can answer more definitively.
I had an interview yesterday and a few hours later they asked me to have 3 supervisors complete a reference check. Is this a good sign? I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high... but I REALLY want the position. Thanks all!!
Dr. Ali FantThe position we both applied for will have the candidate referred to DoDEA HR next Wednesday and HR makes the official offer. This is what the Principal told me after the interview. Congratulations on apparently getting the position. I am happy for you.
