My husband just received his email with his tentative offer paperwork. We have been applying to Dodea for 4 years and so are a little taken aback that it has finally come.
As a lurker on the board for years, I thought it was time to tap into the resources because we will need help understanding everything. Thanks in advance!
One question we do have that probably is too early to think about, but I am a teacher/counselor too. Will there be work available for me? I am willing to be a para or something for the first year and then hope for a local hire something, but even with all the benefits, only one salary is a little scary. Thoughts?
Having housing and utilities covered definitely helps offset the single salary (as does the post allowance which will be another $500-700 a month tax free). Also remember that the tentative offer may not include your husband's step increases if HR has not received his experience verification forms yet.
You may want to reach out to the principals in your new community area and let them know you will be moving into the area due to your husband's position. You never know where it could lead.
HelpOthersI suggest immediately updating your EAS to the locations within commuting distance of your husband's new position. If you are hired within a certain timeline of him arriving in his new position, you are considered a CONUS hire. If not, you may still get something as a local hire. They have to consider local hires before interviewing others.
How long are background checks taking after the tentative job offer has been made??? What will this entail? And....What exactly is the process from here? Thanks in advance to all who reply.
IdaThank you Snow Lane! I have to apologize because I feel like a chicken with my head cut off. Did you quit your current job before you had received your firm offer?
Snow LaneMy situation is different in that I actually haven't been working since December, so no job to quit, though I would have not renewed my contract for next year if I had been. I figured my background check would come back clean. :)
I am hoping you guys can help me out. It is my understanding that after you receive a tentative offer, HR will send you a mammoth load of paperwork to be filled out within 5 days.
What exactly has to be done besides just filling out forms?
Could I possibly get it done in a day or two?
I'm thinking if I know what has to be done that isn't paperwork I could possibly set up appointments "just in case" something happens as far as an offer?
I'm heading out of the country for two weeks very soon and don't want to miss the vacation or a great opportunity! Any advice appreciated, thanks!
GingerZinI just wanted to thank you all for your kind and thoughtful advice! I have really enjoyed checking in on the forum to hear about everyone's future adventures! Best of luck to everyone!
Okay, so we still have a ways to go, but I need to daydream a little about the upcoming move. When we first arrive at our new posts, are we supposed to book our hotel or airbnb for those first few weeks until we find housing, or is that done for us? And, does someone pick us up at airport, or do we book that as well?
In Japan we made our own reservation at the temporary housing on base. We booked our own ride to base (we came in July and there were few staff around.
As someone said, in both places we paid every 10 days and were reimbursed within a couple of weeks after submitting receipts for lodging and meals.
angelI don't know Daegu but I was watching a video of someone living in South Korea who said they wish they had left their car. Though they still used it, the streets were narrow so it was hard to maneuver the vehicle. Hopefully someone that actually lives there will respond.
HelpOthersAnother friend there needs to sell their car and there are so many limitations about who you can sell the American car to that they are wishing they had not brought it.
I have an interview tomorrow at either 7:40 or 8:4 my time. Interview stated 7:40 as it would be 2:40 in Germany. I am from Ohio and the time difference is only 6 hours not 7. Question is do I email to confirm or just be ready for both? Part of me feels this is a test, but I do not want to come across as rude if I ask
Do we find our own housing once we get there? Also for anyone who is already there, I will be at the k-5 school but my daughter is going into 6th grade. Any idea how far that school will be from me or location?
We aren't gonna take my car..I think my SUV is too big and I've heard the train system is great. Thoughts?
Lol nothing like moving to Korea and having no idea where my kid will be!
FunspedTeacherThat is correct however they are changing the k-8 to a k-5 Wasn't sure if they are opening a middle school or they are just combining the middle and high together Just hoping they have softball Woot!!!
EmilyGDid you get a link to the EBIS handbook? HR sent me some info on all of it and said the handbook was attached, but it wasn't, and looking through all of the plans is a bit confusing. It was unclear if I was supposed to actually do anything about it now or just wait until we show up. Our insurance goes until August 31, so I'm not too worried.
I have an interview Wednesday for a preschool disabled position in Germany. I am super nervous and do not believe I will do fantastic with a phone interview. Anyone on here has any advice for the questions that may be asked for this position. Thanks in advance
