I would like to update/change my 'Target Job' on the DoDEA website, but it does not give me that option. Am I missing something in the application?
Once a year there is usually an email saying its time to update your application to be considered. I believe its usually in February. Should I expect that to happen soon?
Yes, if this year is like past years, the update EAS email should be coming fairly soon (but there is no real way of telling if/when that would happen).
oldshackCongratulations! Sorry, I don't have an answer to your question...I am interested in which position you were offered. If you don't mind sharing.
hahaIt varies wildly, from weeks to many months, with around 6 -8 weeks being fairly typical. Check the DoDEA Teachers Interested FB page for more recent timelines.
HelpOthersEven schools outside DoDEA shy from naming specific programs in their IEPs. They also serve SLD in reading based on the specific needs of the student. Even students with "Dyslexia" do not all have the same exact needs.
The best move now might be to add something to that Social Studies cert. Something big like ELA.
Someone mentioned Math and Science. Yes, that would be great. But it doesn't seem realistic for you. Your qualifications are in another direction, meaning that you do not seem to even be close to being a fully qualified Math/Sci teacher able to teach Precalculus, HS Bio, HS Chem, Alg I...etc.
Unless you have more stuff in your transcripts that you haven't shared, then I advise leaving those jobs to someone else.
Just finished my application. We have applied for most of Europe and Japan. I am very hopeful that I will get hired. I teach Spanish and ESL. I have a masters degree in Second Language Teaching, and 4 years of experience teaching in high schools and in higher education settings.
I was wondering what others experiences have been with timing of the hiring process. I have a young family (3 children, ages 3 and under) and I need to be sure I have a job in place for the following school year to provide for them. I want to hold out on other jobs because this is definitely what we want to do, but I don't think it would be wise to wait too long.
What has been others experiences that have gotten hired? Is it likely that I won't be contacted until after July to even be interviewed? At that point, I would be nervous to not have a job lined up. Thoughts?
DoDEA should be a plan b (c,d, etc.) for most people. The odds are generally just too long to make concrete plans on the chance of being hired. On the upside, many/most people end up resigning from their current position to take a position with DoDEA because the odds of just happening to be hired when you just happen to be between contracts are even longer than getting hired in the first place.
Most people seem to have no major issues with employers giving them their blessing (or at least not actively causing them grief). Most principals will realize that taking a position with DoDEA is a once in a lifetime chance, appreciate that you are serving the mission etc. and is a little different than moving a few miles down the road to a new school/district for a little more money.
So, hope for the best, but plan for the worst. Apply for other jobs but in the back of your mind realize that you may need to leave pretty quickly if hired. You could even mention it to a new principal (e.g. Just to let you know I have applied to teach overseas with DoDEA, would be a dream gig, probably never happen, like winning the lottery, etc.) so if it does happen, they can't say that you didn't warn them.
I have a Masters of Education; I have seven years teaching experience in Math/Science and ELA at the elementary levelk; I was an Instructional Specialist for my district for two years; and I am currently in my third year as an Assistant Principal. I've given several district wide trainings at the district level and have participated in more professional development trainings than I can count. I am certified Generalist EC-8, ESL EC-8, and Principal EC-12. I am also a veteran with 5 point preference. Am I in a good position to land a position, or do I need to add something? Would adding certs improve my chances? If so, which ones should I focus on? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
The next best thing would be to review your transcripts and look over the specific credit requirements for the areas your have experience in (and anything else you think you may be close in and/or might want to teach):
State certs can help in that they can reduce the required number of credits by half in many cases.
To maximize your chances for DoDEA employment, you might want to consider applying as a teacher, an admin and/or an ISS if it seems like you would meet the requirements. Also, if you are open to stateside, that might be a good place to start, as many overseas DoDEA teachers/admin/ISS' seem to be be hired from DoDEA stateside.
Does anyone know how the required Professional Evaluations work on EAS? Do evaluation forms go out to each of the evaluators that you list as soon as you put their information in EAS? If it says "yes' next to an evaluator's name that you listed, does that mean that they submitted an evaluation or just that you have listed them?
JeremySThank you for your responses. So, it sounds like the only way to know if the evaluator actually received it and returned it is to touch base with them? When they state that you are required to have 3 evaluations, does that only count when the evaluator has actually returned the form they were sent?
hahaAwesome! Welcome aboard! We love the UK. We were there two years ago for a month for vacation. We want to visit other parts of the world, but keep finding more things/places in the UK that we want to go back and see!
Hello Everyone! I have been referred for several different positions overseas the last several months but have not received an interview yet. I wonder if I am missing something? Would it be a good idea to contact the principal of the school I have been referred to in order to introduce myself or would that be overstepping?
I'm slightly confused. You didn't list a Math cert. Why not? You taught it for 8 years, right?
And are your certs for MS, and HS? You didn't say (other than HS History, I'm presuming). A weak candidate only has MS certs, but not HS.
Resume? Not really important per se. Concentrate on your list of certs. Maybe that's what TTM meant. From what you posted, you have either omitted certs, or there are gaps in your qualifications. These gaps might not be important in your current position, but they are important when trying to get hired into DoDEA.
You need to be willing to take a MS position, or a HS position, or a combination. And adding Math at both levels to your list is a significant addition.
@Oldshack
Just an opinion, but I don't feel that ES referrals are hard to come by. By definition, for one ES position, many people get a referral.
What has gone unmentioned here, is that an ES cert is a common credential among base spouses.. These positions often go to local hires. Joe may just be a space filler on the list of referrals. He's not making the cut for the interviews, because there may be one, two, or even three local hires on the list, depending on the complex.
Final thought. Joe, you didn't list how many Master's Degrees you have. It's not unusual for a DoDEA teacher to have two Master's Degrees. I hope you're listing at least one.
Joe - your answers will allow us to advise you on how best to move forward.
