Come to think of it, that might also work in some cases if you could get certified in another state that offers certification in a specific area that your current state does not (presuming you met the requirements in the other state). Might be worth doing if the other state's certification then let you only have to have meet half of the required credit hours for DoDDS.
So, I would certainly be transparent about your desires, but do know that the whole process is a long one and I would definitely have other plans in place in case you don't get selected. I was going to be a mid-year hire, so that right there is very telling of the unpredictability of the process. I wasn't even given a referral for this position. The principal emailed me for an interview. I definitely wouldn't put off everything on the off chance of getting a position.
Our credentials are: he is secondary math and cute certified. I'm certified elementary and language arts. I'm an instructional coach and staff developer currently. And we both have our admin licenses. Do these sound like desirable credentials? We both have 20 years in public school.
Other question- is somewhere in Europe
hopeless? I've heard those are tough to get. We are going to put Japan as secondary, but it's not our preference. Would love any insights! Thanks so much.
"The President has ordered a government-wide hiring freeze subject to certain limited exceptions. This position is subject to the hiring freeze. Although we are moving forward with the consideration of candidates, we will not make a selection for this vacancy announcement unless and until the position is no longer subject to the hiring freeze."
SpedTeacher74I have a friend that works for DoDEA in Alexandria and she says they've been given no formal guidance. She thinks they are requesting exemptions and waiting for those to be granted or denied...but that otherwise it would be after April 20th before we begin to hear anything on these positions.
happyteacherUgh, this stinks. I hate waiting. This is just going to push back hiring even further. The weird thing is, one of my friends is an involved parent for a DoDEA school in Europe, and she said the school there is starting to get exemptions for hiring.... so many different stories!
hahaIt depends on where the principal is calling from. It could be an international number or it could be a stateside number. Or it could come in as an unidentified number. When in doubt, answer it. They will usually leave a message and ask you to call back if you are interested but sometimes they will just move on to the next person on the list.
A question for the experienced DODDS teachers: with my certification for middle school social studies, high school social studies, and music [instrumental] for MS/HS, and my experiences with coaching football & basketball, do you have suggestion on what I should do to help myself be competitive for a job in the system?
If you could add some other areas that you could teach on paper you would improve your chances. I have seen Social Studies teachers who were also taught a class or two of Psychology and/or Journalism and/or Health and/or PE and so on and so on. Training and experience with AP would also be a plus.
Coaching experience would be appreciated once you are on the job and maybe help you a bit if you make it to interview but it is not usually going to make your application stand out to a searching principal (although anything is possible I guess).
210 MS ELA (Says I do not qualify, though I will have an upgraded license with this endorsement...but it looks like my credits don't meet DODEA)
220 MS Social Studies (I must submit my upgraded license with this endorsement, but am then Qualified)
401 AVID Middle (Pending)
405 AVID Secondary (Pending)
411 Reading Specialist Elementary (Qualified)
412 Reading Specialist Middle (Qualified)
413 Reading Specialist Secondary (Pending)
436 ESOL Elementary (Qualified)
437 ESOL Middle (Qualified)
438 ESOL Secondary (Pending)
What number of qualifications or combinations are more likely to get you on a referral list? When will we know about the hiring freeze exemption/non-exemption?
Middle and Secondary positions can and often are much more of a mixed bag and you will sometimes see some strange combinations. Most school are separate MS and HS buildings, faculty etc. but there are some combination schools where having the the same subject cert at both levels could be very useful (and some schools also share staff if the position is .5 at each school.
There really isn't a magic combination or number of certs to get you noticed. Most positions that come open for state side hiring will have a combination of related core subject(s) with the possibility of some other subjects thrown in (another core subject, a subject they only need one class of like ESL/AVID etc). Obviously the more areas you can be qualified in the more positions you will be a match for, the more referral lists you will make, the more chances you will have for an interview and the more chances you will get an offer. If you could add something like ELA to your social studies and other certs that could be attractive to a searching principal (even better if you could get secondary added to SS and ELA).
With your existing/pending certs you have as much of a chance as anyone and better than some.
No problem. I've been posting here since we first started trying to get into DoDDS so it seems only right to keep posting for people still trying break in (and it's pretty much a hobby at this point).
oregonslpI don't think they ever post a list of current openings, that seems to stay under wraps. They share a list of openings for the transfer round, but I don't think they ever follow up with a list of who went where or what openings are left. We just have to wait and see if we wind up on a referral list or get a call.
Some of the combinations in the transfer round were quite bizzare... almost seems like it would be impossible to fill because of the combos. What happens if they don't get filled and no one in EAS has those combos? WIll they hire someone who has 2 of the 3 to cover that part of the job? Or do they switch up the combinations? For instance, if there was a PE/Science/SPED combo, and someone had Science and SPED but not PE, would they put those together as a position and put the PE part elsewhere? (This wasn't a vacancy I saw, just making it up for example).
hahaPre-K and K are both better bets than elementary. One reason is that many/most states offer a K-6 blanket certification which DoDDS does not accept and so there are much fewer candidates in the system.
hahaI don't know if that has been decided yet (or if it has it hasn't been shared with us). The initially ordered freeze was for 90 days and I don't think we really know what happens then. As soon as we hear something I will pass it on.
