Hi all. I just need someone to clarify something for me. I have been doing some research and read somewhere that if you are a teacher with 10 years of experience in the Public School Systems that when hired within DDESS that you are dropped down to a "Step 5" on the salary schedule. Can someone please explain this to me? Is this accurate and why in the world would this be done when you have put in so many years as a teacher only to be told that you are the equivalent of a teacher who has only been teaching for 5 years???
haha That is correct. As to why, it's a different system. Many districts have their own salary scale/experience cap and so they have theirs (DoDDS is 10 years) . Granted that 5 years is lower than most. . On the upside, the salary scale is higher than most districts (especially if you are from the South and not from California or NYC).

Euxpat Generally, they want to hire teachers with as much experience as possible to get the most bang for the buck. They know they will find someone ready to jump ship. We did have 2 new hires at my DDESS school who were right out of college however, so they don't always pick someone with massive experience.

infiniti4 Thank you for clearing that up. It just seems strange to me...However, if given the chance I would still as you say "jump ship" even with dropping me down to a step 5. The positives still outweigh that minor detail.
