i got an email requesting an email. and then a follow up email with an assigned interview time. it was about a week's notice. And yes, the interview was over the phone.

Usually an email first but sometimes just a phone call out of the blue. All interviews are by phone. I was hired from outside of the US. It can be done but some things are a little more difficult to manage.
