My understanding/experience is that you need to have at least one day of being in a pay status per pay period to maintain LQA. So, basically you need to use a sick day etc or work, at least one day per pay period to maintain LQA. You will often see people ask for contributions and/or a sick leave advance to avoid losing LQA while on LWOP.
