Do you have to have your official passport to take RAT? If so is it possible to leave on your tourist and then come back with the official one?

haha It's basically gov't funded travel from your overseas location to your home of record and back again. Most people qualify for this benefit every two years when they sign a new mobility agreement (which says that you agree to teach two more years wherever they decide you are needed).

SandArt So if I want to fly home every summer, it's my expense? Do you know if flights home are tax deductible?

haha Any travel other than during your RAT year or a PCS move to a new duty station (or back to your Home of Record if you are leaving DoDDS) is at your expense.

haha I don't believe any travel would be deductible unless it was a required work expense (and those would likely be paid for/reimbursable by DoDDS and so not deductable).

HelpOthers Renewal Agreement Travel (RAT) in one year locations is every summer and for two year locations would be every two years. However, I think if you are transferring or think you will transfer, RAT can be impacted, so I would follow the link included by tech_ed
