Also, I'm looking through the stack of paperwork to designate your beneficiary for FERS, FEGLI, and TSP...am I understanding this correctly that if I'm fine with the standard plan (it goes to my spouse) I don't need to do any of that paperwork?

You don't necessarily need to change banks. I recall there being Bank of America (or some subset of it) being on the bases. I joined Navy Federal once there and just electronically moved money between them and my Bank of America account as needed.

I was told we can fill the beneficiary stuff out and bring with us to our new school. I'm not sure if that's correct though.
