My wife and I are both science teachers. Both of us have been teaching for last 15 years in Texas but we are interested in applying for employment at a DODEA school. I was wondering if anyone knows how to figure out how much it would cost to buy back years of service or purchase service credit in the FERS retirement system. I can't seem to find any information online about this. In other words, if we got jobs at a DODEA school and planned to stay in the DODEA system until retirement can we buyback our years of service for our 15 years of service in Texas? Or can we transfer the funds in our current Texas teacher retirement account into a FERS? What else should we know about the FERS system as it related to teachers? Are there rules about how many years of service you need to be eligible for retirement?

Thanks for your help.

haha Not necessarily. You are vested in some type of benefit at 5 years and if you are at or above the minimum retirement age it has some affect on things. And I think some kind of minimum participation is mandatory anywa.

But then again don't rely on my knowledge and interpretations, in this area especially.

It was a great experience but after I got there I started looking into the retirement issues with both FERS and TRS (Texas). The retirement from TRS ...See More

haha True, the retirement aspect is not necessarily the best part of DoDEA. Then again during the years with DoDEA you are often making more in salary (depending on what state you are from) and the years of not paying housing/utilities and getting post allowance can allow you to live well, save and even invest more then you can as a teacher in many stat...See More
