I was hired as a local hire when my husband was stationed in Japan. If I would've stayed there as a local hire there was NO WAY I could have afforded to live there without LQA. But that was Japan. It's a good question. There are a lot of details that might sway you one way or the other depending on your personal situation. Thank you for the responses! @haha, I work at the child development center here so I am under SOFA status. As you can imagine, it isn't a lot of money at all and we currently live on that so even without LQA, a teachers pay is significantly more than I make now. My husband also works however and he is German, working on the economy. We have 2 kids....See More

That makes more sense to me now. The idea of LQA for local hired is generally covered by the 10 mile rule:
