I know most teachers gladly accept any DODEA job offered us. But if you had a choice, would you choose to work at Yokosuka or Yokota? I'm curious about the similarities and differences.

haha They would be 1a and 1b in my opinion. You really couldn't go wrong either way.

Yokosuka is a bigger base (e.g. bigger schools, more extensive medical facilities) with Yokota being obviously smaller. For some people bigger is better while some might prefer a smaller community. Yokosuka is a bigger base (e.g. bigger schools, more extensive medical facilities) with Yokota being obviously smaller. For some people bigger is better while some might prefer a smaller community. If you have children, you might like the idea of bigger schools for them, or you might want them to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond. Also, if your spouse would be looking to work, bigger might have more opportunities (although as a teacher/sub/TA, Yokota still has 4 schools which offers reasonable opportunities).

Yokosuka is Navy, while Yokota is Air Force. There are pluses and minuses to each but for most teachers it's basically a wash (if you or a family member are a veteran you might prefer a particular branch of service). Either base has reasonable facilities for you to enjoy (e.g. commissary, B/PX, fast food/restaurants, bowling alley, gym, movie theater, etc). I believe teachers can live on base but generally live off base at both, but could be wrong, as policies and opportunities can change every few years.

Yokota is easier to get into Tokyo (or at least a straight shot east and faster to get to nice areas West of downtown). The area around base has a number of good malls, restaurants, shopping etc. Yokosuka has closer proximity to Yokohama and it is also reasonably easy to get into to Tokyo. There is a mall right outside the gates and other shopping opportunities within a short/reasonable drive.

Yokota is in a typical Japanese suburb, type community. It is mostly nice, nothing special to some people, fascinating to others, depending on your affinity for Japan, Japanese people/culture etc.

Yokosuka is on the water which is nice (for some people), generally breezier, closer to beaches, some attraction day/trip destinations like Kamakura, Hakone etc. (although these are also very reachable from Yokota).

I'm sure I am missing some major points of interest/comparison but that's off the top of my head. Also, Zama would be 1c in the mix with it's own relative advantages/disadvantages (which would be different for different people): smaller, Army, greener probably, etc).,
