I appreciate your replies. Thanks for the heads up about the long wait for well qualified teachers. As far as state cert, I still have to complete a professional experience or internship (unpaid/recent and supervised) and complete the Praxis tests. I am thisclose to just writing off the whole ordeal. Everything I have done has been towards advancing my goal of getting into DoDDS schools, getting my coursework piecemeal as finances have permitted (and they have largely NOT permitted), living on peanuts, scraping by. And now, a years (more) long wait ahead of me, if the trend you mentioned is indeed going to continue.

haha Well, it is a long road. Maybe your goal should be more geared towards becoming a certified teacher and starting to teach (somewhere/anywhere). That would definitely be beneficial compared to working as a para (which I know full well since I started as a TA for my first job in education).

HelpOthers Do not give up. You have made it this far. Keep plugging away. You may want to try to get a stateside job in a location where they are hiring teachers before they are certified, so you can start getting classroom experience that much sooner. However, if you are in a good program and like where you work, just stick to what you have been doing.

Dr. Ali Fant Well, you could do what I have noticed several ex-PATs doing -- come to China to teach ESL classes. The jobs are aplenty, but it is easy to get burned without a reputable guide.
