I'm in the process of completing my application and totally new to this..hoping to learn from those of you further along! Does having a family ( wife and 2 young kids) make you a less attractive candidate? Also, I'm currently a teacher in Fl. My degree is teaching health/ physical education, however I'm also certified in FL ( via state testing) to teach all middle grades subjects. Physical ed jobs are hard to come by in my area, so I've been teaching math and science the last 6 years. Will it be a problem that my classroom experience is not in my degree area? Are physical education jobs harder to get with DoDDs than other subjects? I gather the certificates I have added to teach middle grade subject areas will not qualify me to teach those areas with DoDDS?

This is a huge goal for my family. I'm looking to do anything I can to make myself a more attractive candidate, even if that might be additional schooling to qualify to teach math, or other subjects. Thank you so much for ...See More
someday I am also in FL and was just recently hired. I teach science here and then HOPE for summer school. Your credits are going to determine what you will qualify for with DODEA. For instance I took state testing for PE but I have not one class in it so I can't qualify. I also looked over my transcripts and had half the credits for ESOL so I went and too...See More

haha I'm also from FL (among other places) and have been with DoDEA for 5+ years.

Agree with someday. The state certs really just cut down on the credit hours by DoDEA for each subject area. If you can go through your transcripts and compare them to the requirements for Math and/or Science, you might find that you are only a couple of/few class...See More

sgluca Thank you for the help! That's all great to hear. I ordered my transcipts today and can't wait to take a look. I have a lot of credit hours due to switching my major before setting on teaching, so hoping that will work in my favor here! Totally open to taking classes also. Am I correct that you need 30 hours to qualify for a subject? And only 15 ho...See More

haha No problem. It varies with MS generally needing 24 and Secondary needing 30 hours. Yes, the state cert generally means that you would need half of that for DoDEA.

You can check out the requirements here if you have not already:

sgluca Thank you again! Without having my transcript in hand I know I'll be qualified for PE, Health, ESOL, then possibly Math and science.. or very close, so some classes may be in my near future. Very excited to begin this process, so thankful for all the great info tonight!
