I might have just stumbled on a huge roadblock for myself, and hoping someone might have some info. In the USA Jobs postings I noticed this:

"Citizenship/Ordinarily Resident Status: Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must not hold Dual Citizenship in the country they are applying within and who are not considered Ordinarily Resident under the applicable Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). An ordinarily resident is anyone who has lived in the host country longer than the allowed number of days without being a member of the forces assigned, civilian component or a family member of either the aforementioned or who has obtained a work permit for any duration. Ordinarily Resident restrictions apply and vary depending on the host nation.

Dual Citizens will not be appointed to positions within the country in which they hold dual citizenship. Citizenship eligibility will be verified prior to appointment.

Firstly, are you a citizen of Italy or not?

Yes, you may be eligible? But are you an actual citizen of Italy today?

sgluca Thank you IsItFriday? I know for certain I do NOT have dual citizenship yet. I have only begun paperwork. The citizenship eligibility is through marriage, I am not eligible by birth. The problem is definitely hypothetical at this point. I just don't want to set a goal or work toward something that would be an impossibility for me in the end.Especia...See More

haha @John. If you are living in the states at the time of hiring you are generally eligible for all benefits.

HelpOthers I appreciate you bringing up the question. My brother has gone through the motions of obtaining Italian citizenship. I qualify, but would have to provide all the documents to prove it and have not attempted it yet. sgluca @ Mary I'm glad this was helpful to you also. I'm thankful I read the fine print, as it hadn't occurred to me that it could be an issue. My wife gained citizenship in the same way, through her grandparents. Our main motivation in gaining her dual citizenship was for our kids, to open up the EU as an option for schooling or living later in life. I a...See More
