I'm interviewing for a .5 teaching position...it'd be a way in. My question is once hired, if a 1.0 position opens up, can you apply for that? Is there a period of time after hire that you are locked into that position before being eligible to move into a different grade level, school on the installation?

LolaTeach It's rare, but it happens. I was converted from .5 to full when a colleague retired. I didn't have to apply for the position. I was simply converted.

haha Sure, it's possible. In general, it is more like just adding to your existing position so it seems like it is not a huge procedure. The sticking point is another .5 or full time position opening up in an area that you are qualified in, AND the principal wishing to either combine it with your existing .5 or move you into.the full time position. haha I believe the covered benefits would also all be .5 if you are hired from stateside but I'm not 100% sure of that or how it would actually work in practice.
