Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone has any experience getting hired for a 0.5 position? I'm a local hire, and I interviewed today for a half time ESL position, which is what I taught in the states for the last 5 years. My question, though, is if I get offered the position and I accept it, is it possible that I could get offered another half time position later in the summer if one becomes available in one of my other certification areas or will my application deactivate and I'm just stuck working part time?

I recognize that I'm really lucky that the one position that exists in my area for my specialty happens to be vacant, but I was really disappointed when I found out it was part time.

Has anyone else been in this position? Or does anyone have any insight on what life is like for a part time teacher at DoDEA?

Whisper That's very reassuring Lola, thanks! Can you tell me how benefits work for .5 teachers?

LolaTeach As a local hire, I didn't receive any benefits, aside from TSP (Thrift Savings Plan) and FERS (retirement).

haha It's possible but obviously impossible to predict how likely it is to be made full time. Half time positions are relatively rare with DoDEA (in my limited experience) since they generally have to be certified in the required area and living in the local community.

From my understanding, you would accrue leave at half the rate of full time ...See More

LolaTeach Ha Ha is correct. Steps increased every other year. I received the standard three personal days, however sick leave was accrued at half the rate.

HelpOthers Once you are employed 0.5 time, if a 0.5 position opens that you are qualified for, they can ask if you want to increase to 1.0 without interviewing others. Especially if it is an ESL position.
