Can anyone tell me anything about MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, or Matthew C. Perry school? Is it a nice place for a family with kids? General pros and cons compared to other places?

In Japan, young children walk alone to and from school- taking the train, etc. It feels so much safer than other countries. Bikes are often left with only a lock on the tire that keeps it from moving. Obviously, someone could still just pick up the bike and put in on a truck (or easily break the lock) etc. but stealing is rare. If you drop a wallet on the sidewalk, often, it will be placed on a fence post or bench nearby to keep it from being damaged, so if you backtrack where you were that day, often, you will find it again with everything still in side. Grocery stores have little fridge lockers you can use from free in case you want to continue shopping at other stores in the building and don't want your groceries to go bad. These lockers are free. People stand on the left on the escalators and pass on the right, just like when driving. There are vending machines (mostly with drinks) all over the place and with snacks closer to and in the train stations. People line up at the locations where the train/subway car doors will open. You rarely see people walking or driving while eating. People use their cell phones on silent when on the trains (not talking or making noise), but I don't see people looking at them while walking and driving. There are smoking booths in and near most businesses, so you don't have people smoking at the entrances to the store, like you see in the USA.

There is still a mindset in the culture that we should all obey the rules (there are lots of rules-some unwritten but expected) for the betterment of the whole. Litter is rare. I see older people picking up the trash that has blown into bushes, etc., during their early morning walks, but in general, just don't see much trash anywhere except in the collection locations. Recycling in Japan is an adventure in and of itself. We have three large cans in the house for plastic, paperboard, and food/burnable trash, and little bins for PET plastics, cans, glass, cloth material, etc. However, if living on the military facility, I don't think any recycling is collected.
