Time line- from last year

So, I was offered my current position exactly one year ago (April 12, 2017- EST). I was in DoDEA Americas at the time and my background check was on file, so I was not required to do EQIP again. My offer came with a report date of August 1 and I actually made it to my duty station by July 31st.

I was at a conference when the offer arrived, so I had to use the hotel e-mail/fax to send back my acceptance. When I returned home, my husband was out of town.

So I started my physical at the clinic on post, but this actually took an entire week to schedule, arrange, complete, and receive the final documentation. I also scheduled appointments at Walgreens or CVS for my husband and kids. One of them indicated they had the Japanese encephalitis vaccine, but then didn't so we found a place that did and had my daughter vaccinated there. My son and husband never were able to get theirs until after they arrived in Japan. I was able to get mine at the clinic during my physical.

I also met with the person in the passport office to find out what would be needed after my husband returned. I had everything I needed when we all went in together (daughter was not yet 16). He kept saying we could travel on our tourist passports, which we did have, so he told us to keep them and applied for the official ones without turning in the tourist ones. He showed us a document that says if your report date is sooner than you can receive a passport, you can travel on the tourist one. So, he planned to have the official ones sent to our new location. However, Eugenia said DoDEA did not want me to do this and she managed to expedite our passports. We received them at 1 PM on Saturday and left flew out on Sunday.

Because I was working at an Army post, I was able to do everything I needed right there. After I received orders, my husband and I attended the meeting where we went over the packing out information and scheduled our move to occur a little more than a week before my son and husband flew out. They stayed behind long enough for the dogs to have room on the rotator and for my son to finish his quarter of college. Our lease was almost up, so we were not penalized for leaving.

I sold my car with the understanding that we would not hand it over until the week of the move and this was great, because my husband sold his car the day Eugenia called to say the official passports were being delivered the next day at 1:00 PM. (so Friday before I left the country- but 6 weeks before the move).

Yes, it was a crazy two and a half weeks, but we did it. Later, my husband handled the move well, although he said he never wants to do it that way again. :) Having my son with him to move both dogs and their crates through the airports was a blessing.

Congratulations to all the new hires and to those still hopeful, don't give up. It took me several years to get into DoDEA Americas and another three to get into DoDEA Pacific. Good luck to you and I hope you are enjoying where you are now too. :)
