Any advice on avoiding debt letters and other financial surprises for those of us just beginning with DoDEA?

haha FYI: I started at Masters, Step 8, and my repayment was $757 per month. It was paid off before the end of the school year as I recall, so I had some time at least with full checks.

someday Thanks Haha Was it per month or per paycheck? I am projecting per paycheck about $880 if they start the repayment right away but I wasn't sure exactly how the repayment worked pr how the advance is determined. I understand its 3 months pay but missing whether they take your pay and divide by 12 or 10, etc I think my numbers are loopy if yours was p...See More

haha Sorry. Vacation brain. Per paycheck. I want to say it was 6 checks for the advance and then they schedule it to be repaid in 20 checks(?). So maybe it wasn't a lot of full checks that first year.

HelpOthers Exactly. You can take up to six paychecks which I did. Then they spread the reduced pay evenly across remaining checks.

wanderer If you plan to be on 26 pay periods starting your second year, I think it's a good idea to get an advance because for me, my paychecks for the first year (required 20 pay periods) were within $100 of what my 26-pay period checks were the second year (you're allowed to ask to have pay spread over the summer starting your second year).
