I am headed to japan and going through the process to take my mother in law with us. It's a long shot I already know that but I'm wondering if anyone has another option.

We are waiting to see if she's approved. In the mean time we are looking for other solutions.

Only one we can think of is having her come over as a tourist and leave every 90 days for a few days then Return.

Any other solutions or suggestions?

The biggest concern is health care....

HelpOthers The only way for her to officially live with you is for her to become your dependent, so you would be able to add her to your insurance. If you do the tourist option, I think there are requirements other than the 90 day limitation and staying out of country only a few days may not be enough.

Happy Teacher Those visiting Japan as tourists are only permitted to stay in country for 180 days of 365 - so leaving and returning only works for part of the year.

HelpOthers For her to be your dependent, you must provide more than half of her income. This tends not to be true for most senior citizens who are also receiving a retirement income. Maybe a tax person could help you figure that out.

Liz My husband and I are planning to apply to teach at a base overseas. We would also like to bring my mother who cares for our son. Did you get your mother in law approved? Could you share the process at all with me as we are looking for more information into the possibility as we are just beginning the application process? Thanks!
