So I was offered a position as an SLP yesterday, stateside. I was really hoping for an overseas position. I know this has been discussed before but could someone explain again how it works getting overseas if I were to take this position. There's a part of me that says "this is a foot in the door" but if that is incorrect thinking then I need to consider all options. I am a single mom, and my understanding is that my daughter would not be afforded the opportunity to attend the stateside school? I also am curious about this idea that if I turn down this position I won't be offered any others this year? Seems super silly and unproductive to me for DODEA to do that. Just wondering if I would have better chances of an overseas position if I turned this down and waited. Thanks for any input guys!

lovetotalkslp @SLPnyc, I am just finishing up my CF in a school district in Pennsylvania. I put all places, because I just wasn't sure....but where I was offered is not my top pick. I do have veteran's preference, so that could have played a part in why they called me. I appreciate your comment. Knowing that I may not get a call for overseas, makes me want to co...See More

IbeforeE @lovetotalkslp i try to keep positive especially when there is so much unknown. I learned from last year to not hold my breath but keep hopeful. You are definitely ahead of the game with an offer but again with your situation, it may not be ideal. either way, the decision you make will be the right one. Keep us posted and good luck!!!

haha It's a tough call. SLP is very specialized so there are fewer qualified candidates in the system, BUT, there are also fewer openings every year. It often goes in waves when it seems like groups of SLP seem to retire, PCS, etc. around the same time. You might to see what it would take to add Speech Assessor to your certs to increase your chances.

IsItFriday? It is not one foot in the door. It is two feet in the foor! Getting hired by Ddess is a great pathway to eventually getting hired by Dodds. Absolutely. 100%. Unlike HaHa there is no hesitation in my opinion.

I believe I am 100% correct.

The % of Ddess teachers who end up getting hired by Dodds is enormous compared to the % of appi...See More

haha I'm happy for you that your confidence in your opinion is so absolute. You should go into politics.

It would be nice if any of us had access to actual numbers and data to compare pathways to being hired by DoDEA overseas and to be able to see how much of an advantage it actually is. Short of that, all we have is anecdotal information (whic...See More
