Is it appropriate to contact administrators in the locations you desire to go as a CONUS hire? Pros & cons?

Possible pro's would be getting on a principal's radar, somehow making a positive impression so that if and when they have an opening that you are a match for you they give your application/candidacy a little more weight then someone else's.

Cons would be getting on a principal's radar, somehow making a negative impression so that if and when they have an opening that you are a match for you they give your application/candidacy a little less weight then someone else's.

The reality is that the nature of DoDEA recruiting is that principals do not have complete freedom to hire who they want. When they have an opening, they submit it to DoDEA and then are given a list of qualified applicants (let's say 25 people +/-). If you are on the list, maybe you are in play. If you are not, it's a moot point. Principals cannot (or are encouraged NOT to seek out specific candidates by name who are not on the list, in part to discourage nepotism, corrupt hiring practices, etc. Many principals might not welcome cold calling/emailing from candidates so as to avoid even the suggestion of impropriety. Many would simply not have the time, energy or inclination to respond.

A small portion might respond positively or remember you come recruitment time. So, most people seem to feel that there is a small chance to harm your candidacy, a greater chance to waste time and energy and a very small chance to help your candidacy. Some people feel the small chance to positively impact their chances is worth it, given what a long shot getting hired by DoDEA is for most people.

Maybe if you make a referral list that tells you they have an opening that matches your qualifications, it may be helpful. It may also be unhelpful if something about your email, supporting materials, etc. turns them off or rubs them the wrong way.

Like many/most things surround DoDEA (and the federal gov't in general) there is no clear or apparent right answer for everyone.
