I have asked this question before, but I am hoping for a little more clarification. I am a licensed teacher living and working in Japan. I have had my EAS settings on worldwide for two years now, and have had no luck.

However, when I switched it to local settings it only let me choose a handful of schools in a small region of Japan. It is a catch twenty-two type situation. Local applicants seem to get preference, but you can only check off a few schools in one region of Japan. This leaves you ineligible for other openings in the country. If I stay on the worldwide setting, I suppose that I am put into a larger pool of people, BUT I am able to throw for every school in Japan. Does anyone have any advice on what is the best option? I really want to maximize my chances this year.

SocialStudiesLivinginJapan Being on a shorter list and applying local really narrows it down to a few schools. The most schools(chances) would be Okinawa, so I was considering that as an option. The housing benefits is not something I am extremely concerned about (and other benefits). Having the jo security of DoDea and being out of the Japanese education system would be the...See More

RJ Worldwide or local does not affect the number of people you are grouped with. Principals are given a list of applicants available to teach in the area, this can be local hires or CONUS. However, they tend to choose local hires for obvious reasons. I've been told that CONUS hires are the last resort, plus they don't have to pay for your move, housin...See More

haha My understanding is that principals "have to: interview any qualified local applicants before they can be approved to hire CONUS (and have a reason if they do not hire a qualified local applicant). If this is in fact true, then it's highly there are fewer qualified applicants in the local commuting area then there are in the entire EAS candidate po...See More

SocialStudiesLivinginJapan Hey RJ, I am not worried about having to pay for my own rent, or receiving RAT. I pay for my own rent now, and I have been living in Japan for 10 years. Rent is cheap here. I can rent a house for 1,000 dollars in certain areas outside of bases. This is nothing compared to where I am from on the East Coast. My problem is the range of the "local hire...See More

RJ I understand. Maybe try applying for schools at larger bases, if you area is narrow. Keep in mind that as a local hire, you are competing against military spouses who may use spousal preference. The good news is, that souses can only use SP for one job per your, so not everyone can use theirs.

Good luck!
