It depends. I have heard of references being contacted after the interview and I have heard of people being hired and saying they don't think any contact was made beyond the electronic reference.

Sometimes they contact references before an interview. I have experienced this more often than afterwards, but I have been asked for the contact information of references during an interview, that I assume made it possible for them to contact afterwards if they chose.
